Borg won his 11 slams in a three-slam era when Australian Open was seen irrelevant for many players. Borg only competed at AO once before he won his first Major and never played it again. When you are comparing players from different eras, you need take into consideration that competition system, the importance of certain tournaments and the tour overall was different between two periods. Borg's 11 slam count would be equivalent of winning around 14-15 Majors today.
Winning 11 slams by beating mostly Federer and Nadal in the finals is equivalent to winning 22 slams in the 70's. /rolleyes
I mean seriously why do people come up with random shit criteria to transmute the numbers which are fairly straghtforward? If you want to be serious about comparing history Johnny Groove has at least a somewhat objective measuring system in the advanced discussions thread.
It's so different nowadays because Borg used to play every point at the French Open from the back of the court, and serve-volleyed every point at Wimbledon. He also only played the Australian Open twice.
They are 11:11 in GS titles. So any argument for one side automatically creates a counterargument for another side. In your case, that's a lack of HC slams for Borg.
In other words, they are even and claiming one is better than other just reveals a personal preference for the particular player.
Two of the most boring matches I ever saw was Borg VS Eddie Dibbs, live at Forest Hills, and Borg VS Vilas YE final on TV. Off grass, Borg was very consistent, but mostly boring to watch.
I certainly dunno if Novak is above Rod Laver given how difficult is to measure The Rocket's success because of the transition from Pre-Open Era to Open-Era, but I'm certainly sure that, if not still, Djokovic will end up this year surpassing Börg. One more Grand Slam will be the icing on the cake and the best scenario to grab that spot in the GOAT list, I reckon.
Forget Djoker - I never accepted that even Sampras passed Borg
