mmh , if i get these numbers right...Henman could only hold serve 2 times and was broken 6 times

Re: Gaston Gaudio beats Tim Henman 6:1 6:3

It just goes to show that changes in form can also change the match-up between players. Since their claycourt meetings in 2001 Gaudio has gone up, and Henman was right there with him in 2004, but then went down while the Argentine has remained in the Top 10. And despite the 3-0 record going into this encounter, when you're ranked low and clay is still your weakest surface then one of the last people you want to face in your first clay match in nearly a year is Gaudio. His depth basically kept Henman pinned behind the baseline all day and forced him to go for low percentage shots, although the latter had one of his appalling serving days as well.

That match also demonstrated to me how similar Gaudio and Henman are mentally, despite their completely contrasting styles. Both can play brilliant lights-out tennis for a few games, then after one missed shot play like total crap for ages afterward; both find it almost impossible to remain in the zone for any extended period of time; both get distracted by ridiculously petty things, like a curtain at the back of the stadium being open (Henman) and the lights on the scoreboard being too bright (Gaudio); both can never make it easy for themselves on their own service games, turning every one into an ordeal with missed first serves and lax play after working hard to obtain a lead. Only Gaudio could lose a 40-0 lead serving for the match, and then have the match gifted to him in the next game through Henman playing yet another appalling service game.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Henman didn't play that badly. Just struggled to win the points, despite often playing well during them.

Oh maaannnnn ... tsk ... oh that REALLY bums me out ... there goes his ranking too.

Then again, loosing to Gaudio, that's not too bad ... on clay, too bad to loose in the 1st round though.

Re: Gaston Gaudio beats Tim Henman 6:1 6:3

Here;s the official report, from TIM's website:

Seventh seed Gaston Gaudio proved too good for Tim Henman in the first round of the Masters Series Monte-Carlo on Monday.

The Argentine world number eight dropped just four games against Henman, winning 6-1 6-3.

All in all, it was a bad first clay court outing of the year for Henman, who only managed to hold serve twice.

It was the first time Gaudio, a former French Open champion, had beaten Henman having lost their three previous meetings.

Later on, Argentina made it 2-0 over Britain for the day when Juan Ignacio Chela sent Greg Rusedski packing.

The left-hander managed to take the second set on a tie-break, but fell 6-1 in the decider.
