Re: Kuerten's Track Record at Aussie Open

You're right, Guga's results at the Australian Open are much worse than for any other major! far below his ability!

1997 2nd round
1998 2nd round
1999 2nd round
2000 1st round
2001 2nd round
2002 1st round
2003 2nd round

I have wondered myself why he hasn't done well. Movement on rebound ace is very different than his best surface (clay). On rebound ace it is dangerous to try to slide because of the way the surface grips. But it seems like he should be able to make this adjustment, and otherwise the conditions would be good for his game. Well, maybe he'll do better in the future!

Re: Kuerten's Track Record at Aussie Open

Must we talk about Guga's track record at the AO??????

Isn't it bad enough that Lleyton must bring up in every second interview that he beat Guga on clay in Brazil????????

The Aussies are bad medicine for Guga.

p.s. for all of those who weren't able to tell already, all of that was said in good humor with no seriousness intended......... except.... really do we have to bring up how miserably Guga plays in Oz?????

Re: Kuerten's Track Record at Aussie Open

Guga usually has difficulties to close his matches in AO... in 2001, he had a match point against Rusedski in the second round and lost 9-7 in the fifth set... in 2002, he was leading 2 sets to 0 and still lost in 5 sets to Boutter (I know he had the hip problem, but still)... and last year, in the 2nd round, he had break points in the fifth set against Stepanek and still lost... I REALLY hope Guga can surpass the 2nd round jinx this year! Go GUGA! Continue the great play you showed 2 months ago!

Re: Kuerten's Track Record at Aussie Open

Guga's fans know about his "crap" record at the AO.

His rank didn't help him when he was #1.

He's been very very unlucky there in the draw and in the matches.

Re: Kuerten's Track Record at Aussie Open

Bad luck isn't what should be blamed. I would say the heat, surface, his rustiness, and his poor physical conditioning (at the start of the year) all play a part in his lack of Oz success over the years.

Djokovic // Del Potro // Paire // Thiem // M. Zverev // Youzhny
Coric // Khachanov // Donaldson // A. Zverev // Bublik
Ferrero // Rafter

And the fact that he gets really out of sorts having to leave Brasil in the summer time when he likes to hang out at the beach.

I won't say bad physical condition. He worked hard during the off season. Like last year, he started training at the beginning of December and he played well in Auckland winning his 1st title of the year.

Re: Kuerten's Track Record at Aussie Open

Well I never knew about his such poor record at Oz either. A player of his caliber and past accomplishments should have done better than a 2nd round showing after all these years.

It's unlikely that he'll meet Heewee.
