ATP: Kafelnikov Withdraws From Australian Open

Kafelnikov Withdraws From Australian Open

Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov has withdrawn from the Australian Open, which begins January 19.

The 29-year-old has an illustrious history in Melbourne. In 1999, he won the title, defeating Thomas Enqvist in a four-set final. A year later, he reached the final again, but fell to Andre Agassi. He also reached the quarterfinals three times, in 1995, 1996 and 2001.

Kafelnikov, who has been considering retirement, reached the World No. 1 ranking in May 1999. He ended 2003 No. 40 in the ATP Champions Race.

If he's going to play anymore he better do it properly, not like last year.

looks like he is gonna retire. He had to withdraw cos his name is entered automatically. He's not entered any ATP events himself.

wish he went out after DC win in 2002.

Yeah, he played like **** last year! He should have retired a year
ago. Such a shame! He used to play such a fluid, classic style of
tennis.

He should have went out when he won DC in 2002, like he said he would.

Maybe he wont retire, and its just that his foot is still bothering him? You never know with Yevgeny. I'd have thought he'd announce it in advance.
