Explanation please

I know this is pretty random and a *bit* late to bring up now, but I'm confused about the TMC. Okay, so in the Red Group Schuettler was named the #1 player, but he had an inferior record in the Round Robin to Roddick (#1 Rainer Schuettler: 2-1 [matches], 4-4 [sets] 43-42 [games], #2 Andy Roddick 2-1 [matches], 5-4 [sets], 51-42 [games]). I know that Schuettler beat Roddick in the RR, but they're not supposed to decide by that. Based on these stats, Roddick was really the best in his group instead of Schuettler, and, therefore, the semifinal match-ups should have been: Roddick/Agassi and Federer/Schuettler. This might have changed the outcome of the tournament.

So what's the deal?

Re: Explanation please

I believe that if two players have the same record (in this case 2-1), they do go FIRST to the head to head. Rainer beat Andy so that's that. If you look at the doubles, something similar happened there too. Personally I think it's a silly way of doing it but whatever c'est la vie. At some point during the tourney, this came up and someone dug up the fine print rules and it was in there.

But I agree, I think it likely would've changed the outcome....

Re: Explanation please

From what the commentators said, I also was led to believe that the head-to-head broke the tie.

But I have never seen it in print or anything...

Re: Explanation please

Okay, thanks. I thought I heard from one of the commentators that it went directly to set record and then game record, not H2H.

Re: Explanation please

I don't think it would change the outcome.
It would still likely to be a Agassi/Federer final

Re: Explanation please

Still likely to have been the same final, but I agree that it *should* go to set record, and game record...instead of going by head to head.

Re: Explanation please

It does go to set record and game record if it is a 3 way tie.
It is a little unfair if your tied with a player you beat and he goes with an advantage compared to you.

It also favours certain players - for example Agassi with his great return is likely to win more sets with 6-2 sort of scorelines.

Players like Roddick and Federer on the other hand generally get the one break and then rely on their great serves to get them the set.

Re: Explanation please

Yeah, I think H2H is more fair, actually
If you beat the person 1 or 2 days ago, you are kinda better in this tourny

Re: Explanation please

then again, the way tennis is, you never know.... I mean look at the two Agassi-Federer matches... Agassi was right up there with him in the first match and got blown away in the second. So who knows. There's probably no 100% perfectly fair way of doing it.
