Cool Guga not the only one who wants Olympic gold

Philippoussis eyes Athens Olympics gold
Sportal

Unlike his Davis Cup teammate Lleyton Hewitt, Mark Philippoussis will contest next year’s Athens Olympics.

Hewitt revealed on Wednesday that he has decided to skip the Games in the Greek capital because the final of the tournament will be played just three days before the US Open starts in New York.

But agent Brian Cooney confirmed that 1998 US Open and 2003 Wimbledon finalist Philippoussis, who is of Greek origin, has targeted Olympic success as his top priority for 2004.

"Mark has set himself for the Athens Olympics," Cooney told The Daily Telegraph. "It's his main goal for 2004."

Doubles champion Todd Woodbridge has also confirmed his availability to play in Athens, if given the nod.

"I'm committed to playing at least another 14 months because I want to play the Olympics," Woodbridge said. "My aim is to be a four-time Olympian, not many tennis players have done that. I'd be very proud to have achieved that."

And former Australian player John Alexander says the absence of Hewitt and probably several other frontline players in Athens could have been avoided had the tennis been scheduled earlier in the Games.

"I think it would be better to have tennis in the first week of the Olympic program," he said. "That would give players a week's space to get ready for the final Grand Slam. You can't expect tennis to have any impact on the timing of an Olympics."

Roddick's Athens plan
Sportal

Andy Roddick has confirmed that he will represent the USA at next year’s Olympics in Athens.

The 21-year-old’s coach Brad Gilbert confirmed Roddick is committed to the August 15-22 tournament despite the fact it falls just weeks before the start of his US Open defence.

Gilbert said that he had convinced Roddick that the Olympics were a suitable path for the Open.

"Athens 2004 – we're definitely going," Roddick's coach, Brad Gilbert told AP.

"I was with Andre when he won gold in '96 in Atlanta, and I played on the team in Seoul in '88," Gilbert said. "It was a great experience."

Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt announced this week that he wouldn’t compete in Athens, following the lead of girlfriend Kim Clijsters who will miss the Games because of sponsorship conflicts.

Naldo, ROFL!! "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you..." oh, bullshit, who am I kidding? I wanna WIN GOLD!

But I have to say, I'm kind of worried about the security in Athens. It'll be a prime target for terrorists. I pray Athens doesn't become another Munich.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Well Greece has always had problems with internal terrorist groups. On the news they talk about the security measures that they're putting into place, I see reports about it once in a while on various networks, so they're obviously trying to do the best they can...... all we can hope is that the crazies stay home... *sigh*

(btw, tangerine, did you get the PM I sent the other day?)

It's nice that the Olympics are still being seen as an event with high prestige.

Like father, like son

"For seven and a half years I've worked alongside President Reagan. We've had triumphs. Made some mistakes. We've had some sex...uh...setbacks."
George H.W. Bush, 1988

"I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family."

15.5 - 40.5 ... 2,1,1 demolition job

They are. Just not relative to slams in tennis.
