Re: olympics

I believe it's determined by rankings.... so I'd guess Ferrero and Moya would be the first invited?

Assuming that they continue to be the top 2 Spainish tennis players, then yes. We won't know for sure until the ranking the olympics use come out and that isn't until 14 June 2004.
But if Ferrero or Moya have a bad year and don't defend their points and drop in the rankings then it could be someone else from Spain that would go.
Sorry claudine140, but your just going to have to sit and wait and hope that whomever you want to go has a good year.

Re: olympics

Yea...top two players in each country I think.

Like father, like son

Re: olympics

I thought that I read that they were taking the top 48, then some wild cards? With no more than 4 from each national federation? I'm pretty sure that it's more than 2... surely a team like Spain, Argentina or USA ought to be able to bring more players than Australia?

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Re: olympics

Claudine - if his ranking is high enough at the time - I imagine it will be - Moya has stated that he intends to play the Olympics with Juan Carlos... it's one of his goals for the year, or whatever.

Coria has said the same... although, no the "with Juan Carlos" part

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Re: olympics

Here's what it says on the ITF Olympics site:

Selection date: the International Computer Rankings of 14 June 2004 will be used to select players eligible for Direct Acceptance in singles and doubles.

Number of competitors: 172 maximum

Nomination dates:
MEN: A maximum of six (6) men may be nominated by any one country.
WOMEN: A maximum of six (6) women may be nominated by any one country.
A maximum of four (4) men may compete in the men's singles and a maximum of four (4) women may compete in the women's singles. A maximum of four (4) men and four (4) women may compete as teams in the men's and women's doubles.

and I really don't see Ferrero or Moya dropping below the top 4 from Spain by June LOL

Re: olympics

Bunk - Ferrero and Moya are going to get shoved back by the coming of age of Lopez, Robredo and Nadal, and the return to greatness of Costa and Corretja. Didn't you hear?

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Let's speculate! Who will make teams Spain, USA, and Argentina?

This could be fun

I lack direction.

Re: olympics

lol they might... but not by June

Fun idea...Let's see.... b/c when you think about it - these are pretty much the only three countries with enough depth in the top to possibly send all 4 people, aren't they?

US:
Roddick
Fish
Dent
Ginepri
Blake will have to do something magical or hope one of the others doesn't want to go - maybe he'll improve Jan-June and be in the top 4 - I hope so, I'd rather see him go than Robby

Spain:
Ferrero
Moya
Lopez
4th spot could be up for grabs....Robredo maybe? not sure.

Argentina:
Coria
Nalbandian (assuming he doesn't have to have surgery or something)
then a little trickier! Zabaleta? Chela? Calleri? I don't know!

And as a digression....the Russian women's delegation will be interesting lol

Re: olympics

The US women will also be interesting, seeing as they make up half the top ten, and only 4 of them can go... and at the moment, the defending gold medalist isn't even in position to go.

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Re: olympics

I would send Coria, David , Calleri and Chela.

I miss: Ivan Lendl, Korda, Novak, Bruguera, Rios, Kucera, Courier, Mantilla, Costa, Santoro and Ferreira.

Good luck to:

Gaudio, Murray, Florian Mayer, Chela, Nalbandian, Radek Stepanek, Volandri, Youzhny and Verdasco.
