Guga: Olympic medal would complete my career

Kuerten Sets His Sights on Olympic Medal
Tue Dec 16, 3:32 PM ET Add Sports - Reuters to My Yahoo!

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten (news) said Tuesday that his target for next season was to win a medal at the Olympic Games (news - web sites) in Athens.

"For a guy like me, who's already won a Grand Slam event and a Masters and has been world number one, winning an Olympic medal would be a dream, it would complete my career," he told reporters.

The Brazilian (news - web sites), three-times French Open (news - web sites) champion, finished the year 15th on the entry rankings after winning two ATP tournaments in Auckland and St Petersburg.

However Kuerten, who rose to the world number one spot at the end of the 2000 season, failed to make much impression in the grand slam events this year, with his best effort coming at Roland Garros where he reached the fourth round.

But he is hopeful of more titles, especially on his favored clay courts.

"I'm sure my best chances really are on clay," he said. "It's very important for me to start winning on clay again.

"I have a dangerous game and if I manage to win two or three matches in a row, the other guys start looking at me in a different way.

"The main thing for me is to stay motivated. I've been on the circuit for a number of years, I've had excellent results, I've reached number one and I still look forward to training."

He should be going for the gold, not just a medal.

Interesting to think that of all the current players, Guga is second only to Agassi in number of majors won!

It would be great for him to win the Olympics, but I think he should still be aiming for the majors. Three slams is great, but if he could add on one or two more, his status would rise tremendously for the history books.

Then again, even if he never wins another title, he is still an outstanding player, one of the greats on clay, and one of the best personalities in the history of the game!

go guga!

Re: Guga: Olympic medal would complete my career

apparently i have higher ambitions for Guga than he has for himself!

Q. When you've played as few matches as you have over the last two, three months, did you ever lack motivation to go out and practice?

ANDY RODDICK: Motivation? No. I enjoy what I do. I enjoy what I do. You know, I've never been one to, you know, blow off practice or, you know, do anything like that.

You know, I'd be lying if I said I'm looking forward to practicing the next two days as opposed to playing here. That part is gonna suck...(2010 Aegon Championships)

Guga isn't thinking of retirement, he only says that when he'll retire, if he won a gold medal, he would call it a complete career... I heard him saying that he still have some years ahead of him for sure! He's 27 years old so he still has at least 3 years I think..

Guga Kuerten

Roger Federer & Novak Djokovic

That's a real patriotic spirit. And that's the people I admire, the ones who really love and do anything for their country.

Way to go, Guga!!!

Aren't all love stories destined to fail?

I am not sure whether there are some words left in the translation or from the writer. I believe Guga aims for the gold. He also said he wants to win another slams, especially RG.

GO Guga!!!!!!!!
