Djokovic will never win the French Open?

Did he missed his last chance? If he couldn't win it between 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, especially in 2011 and 2015 where he had his best years by far, aren't the odds therefore against him to do it in the future? Although I don't believe that you have to win every title out there to be a GOAT contender, you have to however win all 4 slams. They are just too important. If you are missing a slam trophy then at least you should be able to claim a slam title on each surface. It's amazing to see Djokovic have a year like 2015 but until he wins the French Open, the ultimate prize on Clay, I believe he will never be truly satisfied and truly a complete GOAT contender. It's a shame for him and his legacy, but it makes it an interesting story to watch. He is so great and impressive, yet not great enough to lift all 4 slam trophies. Very intriguing.

Re: Djokovic will never win the French Open?

He played a very bad match against Wawrinka this year.

Chances are he will win it, but also likely he won't. It depends on how he deals with the pressure and what Nadal can do next year.

Probably he will. Although obviously he doesn't "need" it to be an elite player (see Sampras).

Re: Djokovic will never win the French Open?

Never write a legend off. I had the same feeling right when the tournament finished: that was the best opportunity to win it having beaten Nadal on the way, in his peak year... but he'll keep trying, no one is more stubborn and dogged than him. To measure his GOAT candidacy solely based on whether he has won RG or not would be extremely silly, specially because it seems he still has some more years to cement his legacy, but yeah I do agree that winning all Grand Slams would add a majestic argument and would probably make him surpass Sampras and Borg.

You don't have faith in Wawrinka this time again?
Or you want to acknowledge that his performance was once in a lifetime?
Either way, for Novak it depends on those 2 factors I feel too.
Something tells me it is so unpredictable now... maybe he should release the pressure to skip more events before RG, or just learn how to finish matches when he has the upper hand (like the Murray SF this year).

Re: Djokovic will never win the French Open?

I would agree that he needs an RG in order to be a GOAT contender. But I am also confident that he will eventually get one. Nadal looks done for as a slam contender (and even if he does improve on his form next year I doubt he will ever be as dominant at RG again as he was). Aside from Nadal, pretty much only a GOAT performance like Wawrinka's this year can reasonably stop Djokovic from winning RG. And that's not likely to happen too often.

Of course Novak might end up never winning RG, but he still has plenty of chances as of now. No reason for us Novak fans to be pessimistic yet

Stan played the match of his life for sure, but I'm a little disappointed in how Djokovic handled him, especially in the 4th set. That was a pretty even Match standard wise, but usually when the standard is even Djokovic gets the mental edge. I thought really he would step up and win in 5, but obviously he was feeling a bit of pressure. Also as a Stan Fan you learn not to expect too much from any one particular match

This being said though as a proud Australian

Not sure if this is supposed to be a troll baiting thread or not, but with the poster having a questionable history i'm willing to bet it is

on topic, I still think he'll win a French open title within the next 3 years, last year was a huge missed opportunity though and yes he didn't win it in 2011 or 2015 his best years but 2009 the year Federer won the French wasn't his best year either when you compare it to 2004, 2006 and 2007 so who knows, I wouldn't count novak out yet

Except this was his 2009 moment relative to Roger's. With Nadal being a non-factor as well. It's all downhill now, even in this weak era..

Re: Djokovic will never win the French Open?

He'll make it.

IMO he should "tank" Miami and IW in order to work harder and sooner on clay, he can clearly progress on this surface, tactically and physically.

Of course, with easier draw and schedule than 2015, he will probably win it regarless of any progress.

Re: Djokovic will never win the French Open?

He still has a reasonable chance to do it, and possibly more than once, but does not have unlimited time.
Nobody has really stepped up this year on clay, apart from Stan's all guns blazing at RG, so next year will be the clincher.
As others have said, and just like Sampras, Lendl at Wimbledon or Borg at USO etc, he does not need to win it be an ATG.

Re: Djokovic will never win the French Open?

If he can make win 7 Masters on clay and make 3 RG finals, I think he can win it.

He lost this year's RG because he took his foot off of the gas after beating Nadal. It was a double-edged sword playing him in the QF: he was more likely to beat him in a QF rather than a final, but it FELT like a final, thus making Djokovic feel -- I'm assuming -- that he had already won it.

So I hope he learned his lesson that you haven't won until you've actually won it.

Very true, Djokovic is a very entitled player, yes he is.
