Rennes SF: Igor Sijsling defeats Illya Marchenko by 7-6(6) 3-6 6-4
Great match from both players, Marchenko's good level of play continues but his victory streak comes to an end. At the first games of the match Sijsling was serving fast and comfortable while Marchenko was suffering in his service games. Igor managed to be a break up but Illya started to dictate the points by hitting hard and flat with his forehand to Sijsling's backhand, which is his main liability. However, Illya was in overall more prone to errors and less consistent than Sijsling, something that caused him to lose the first set in the TB. The momentum went again to the Marchenko's side in the 2nd set with an improvement serving, and then in the third I would say that both players were fairly competitive. The first games of the final set were dominated by serves but from the 7th game play got interesting and some really good points were played, like the two ones from Marchenko after he was 3*-4 15-40 down. Finally, Sijsling prove today to a better player in defense and he managed to close the match in return after a huge miss from Marchenko smashing a ball at the net.
I would say that Marchenko pointed to Sijsling backhand side too many times, it probably would have been better to change to the other side a little bit more, some good backhands from Sijsling came after Marchenko repeating twice or three times to the backhand side. Credit to Igor anyway, he was slicing the ball deep and making things harder.
