Ramos vs Seppi: Biggest upset of the year?

I think Seppi and Ramos's wins over Federer this year have been by far the most 'WTF'/dumbfounding results of the year, even more than any of Nadal's losses vs random non-entities.

I have to go with Ramos's win today though, I hadn't been this shocked by a tennis result since Boredo beat Federer in 2013...

Robredo beating Federer was clearly guessable, don't hate Lenders ;)

On topic, I think Seppi still. As it was a slam and all.

Mugray losing to Gabashvili was funny aswell though. Got to be up there, no?

Seppi. Federer was more rested at the start of the year and there was no reason to lose here, to a player of Ramos calibre. Still Ramos implemented nadulls tactics well and exploited the federer weakness on the backhand nicely. So he deserved his first top 10 win.

There's a strong case for either. In one sense, player v player, the Ramos defeat is more shocking. In another it's Seppi - being at a slam, perfect preparation and whatnot (since I think Fed won Brisbane). Whereas he hadn't played in a while before this and got caught cold. Tough to call, depends on how you factor the occasion. He'd also had a couple of matches to acclimatize in Australia... yeah, I'm gonna say Seppi, narrowly.

Seppi. It was in a slam and Seppi's game shouldn't bother Federer at all. Ramos is a non-entity on hardcourt of course, but his game is pretty much a light version of Nadal's. Plus Federer should have lost here in his first match last year as well.

I would still go with the Seppi upset..two round in in a HC Slam after coming off winning Brisbane ..This was the classic 1st round made tricky or ugly because of lack of rhythm for top player that once you check off, you cruise the rest of tournament..Pretty much c the leandro Mayer match of last year without the latter choke..top players win those kind of matches 95% of the time..

Seppi at the slam. Shanghai's a throwaway event and Fed treats it as such.

No excuses for Fed at the AO this year be they event prestige, rust, injury, whatever. Seppi was better than him that day and that made for one hell of an upset. The Robredo loss was similar but it occurred during Fed's back problem period whereas the AO '15 was right in the middle of Fed's late career mini-resurgence.

Only in terms of rival it's Ramos but if we consider event importance it has to be Seppi and he receives my vote.

Has to be Seppi, it was a slam and Federer wasn't rusty like was in the Ramos match.

AO was his most consistent slam, so it was shocking to see Federer lose his 11 SF streak there, in Shanghai, it's not the first time he struggled in the first few rounds anyway.

Of course it's going to be Seppi..... He was something like 10-0 going into that match against him with barely any sets lost against him at that stage.

Federer tries his guts out for slams, for obvious reasons and losing a match at a Masters Series event (that he previously won the year before ... and when he should've lost in the first round at that) doesn't even register on the 'meh factor'.Federer has said in the past that best of 3 set matches can be a lottery in some ways as it's easier to beat him in best of 3 then it is in best of 5.This tournament merely served as a warmup for the latter events like Basel/WTF and also also to consolidate as many points as he can from the previous years success.Apart from that, not much else.

Australian Open has also been a tournament where he's gone deep for a continuous decade.... Shanghai, not.

Neither of the two above. It was Wawrinka beating exhausted Novak in RG final.

The OP and the most of posters are overrating Federer and underrating Novak, as usual.

Seppi, he's the better player to Ramos-Vinolas by some margin, but with the occasion and the SF streak, it's got to be him. I still remember how I woke up to the news. I hadn't even bothered to get up earlier.

Ramos-Vinolas is the worse player, but it can happen in a first round of a minor event like Shanghai. Even though it is still a disappointment, obviously.

that's often the truest sign of an epic shocker..you don't bother to wakeup/stay up for it..and you take your time to fetch coffee or something before checking the score ..that's how NID it is assumed to be, or NOT..
