Thumbs up Agassi to skip the claycourt season

Best decision he's made in years. The clay is no good for his back problems and playing the clay isn't important, anyway. Far better for him to save his health for the grass and hardcourt season where he plays his best stuff. I've missed seeing him at Wimbledon.

Agassi to skip clay-court season

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Andre Agassi will skip the entire ATP clay-court season, including the French Open, to improve his chances of playing at Wimbledon.

The 35-year-old Agassi said cortisone injections are helping him stay on the court after sustaining a lower back strain and a sprained left ankle in the last few months.

"It is not realistic for me to consider myself competitive on clay," Agassi said Monday after a first-round win at the Dubai Open. "The wear and tear it puts on my body has set me back the last couple of years. And Wimbledon is something that I don't want to miss this year."

Agassi is playing only his second tournament of the season and third since lossing to Roger Federer in the final of the U.S. Open last September. Two weeks ago, Agassi pulled out of the SAP Open with a lower back injury. (Related story: Agassi, Henman advance at Dubai Open)

The eight-time Grand Slam champion hinted that he has been thinking about retirement.

"I am always on the edge," Agassi said. "I don't know when, but it can happen quickly. I get motivated with the challenge. This is what I do, and I have not decided to stop doing that. But it is getting more difficult on the body, it is getting more difficult on the mind."

His chronic back problem flared last May following a five-set loss in the first round of the French Open. The sciatic nerve injury sidelined him for two months, forcing him to miss Wimbledon for a second straight year. He had a hip injury in 2004.

Agassi had a 6-4 record last year on clay, where he's won seven of his 60 career titles.

In February, he played in a tournament in Delray Beach, Fla., after receiving cortisone shots between the vertebrae in his back.

"It is only nine minutes of absolute pain, but it does buy me three months of tennis on the tour," Agassi said. "I hope it is not necessary again and again. I just want to take care of my body better and keep feeling good as long as possible.

"There is nothing that suggests that my back is going to get better, and I will have to keep taking the injection for the rest of my playing days."

Agassi still managed to produce some magical shots against Greg Rusedski of Britain in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win on Monday. He'll face either lucky loser Giorgio Galimberti of Italy or Bjorn Phau of Germany in the second round.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Yes, this was on the news a few days ago and I think there is also a previous thread already. I think it is a very good decision, he is not in denial about how much his body can take. And clay is the worst probably for his problems

Um Tangy. Andre has exactly ONE GRASS TITLE. He doesn't play his best on the grass so perhaps you should check your facts first, but he will have better results on the green stuff than the red dirt any day of the week.

Good decision although it would've been nice to play a farewell French Open for the fans.

Re: Agassi to skip the claycourt season

normal would be that players should play Grand Slams, he played the French Open many times and did get very good results there and won there. I understand that at 35 his body can only take limited tournaments and Agassi was useless on clay last years. Better not injure on clay and French Open like he did last year and had to draw back from wimbledon; because I would like to play one last Wimbledon much more than one last French Open.

Re: Agassi to skip the claycourt season

Right decision, his back and body can no longer take clay as it used to, and he hasn't played Wimbledon since 2003 and he's desperate to make it there this year.

I am BUOH, warrior of heart and soul.

It's good that he'll get some rest from matches and probably more practise on grass.
