Day 1 matches to watch...

What matches do you think will be interesting to see on Day 1? Based on either a possible upset or just evenly matched unseeded players...

A few I thought of:

Ivan L./Guccione- Chris has a good serve & is @ home so u never know, he took out JCF, but Ivan will likely be too strong for him.

Ginepri(13)/Melzer- Melzer is a tricky opponent for a seeded player early

Henman/Tursunova-Will be a good match I think. Dmitri has beaten Tim before

Malisse/Youzhny- 2 unseeded players who are pretty good. Should be a good match.

Santoro/Spadea- Battle of Veterans. Vince loves the hardcourt, but Fabrice is very hard for anyone to play...

What are your thoughts on interesting Day 1 matches?

Re: Day 1 matches to watch...

I guess here in the US, we will get to see all of the Ginepri match. I hope the Ginepri match ends soon so that I can see some of the Henman match.

Need ideas for a new signature...

Yes, I'm hoping that ESPN will show some of Henman's match b/c I think it will be very good on this surface... but I seriously doubt they will due to the fact that there are lots of US players early in the tournament.

I doubt all of it - he's playing at the same time as Lindsay - she's the featured match today according to the ESPN listings. Probably when she's over they'll go to Robby. But also Blake and Dent are playing during the live coverage so I imagine they'll get checked on too. But I agree, I'd like to see a lot of these other matches instead, but it's just the reality of our coverage.

Re: Day 1 matches to watch...

Yes, ESPN usually only shows Henman @ Wimbledon With Davenport, Ginepri, Dent & Venus playing early in the day, it's very unlikely we'll get to see that match.

Calleri is primarily a clay court player, though he does have a bigger serve than most "clay courters" and a very strong forehand. He had a lot of injuries (including a serious back problem) that kept him out of the game for a lot of last year, and explains why his ranking has dropped below Number 50 for this season, - but he was up in the Top 20 in 2003/4. He has won clay court titles and was runner-up to Coria in the Hamburg Masters' in 2003. Although he's one of my favourite players, I think I can be honest enough to say he can be a little "flaky" at times His temperament is not the best and he has a bad record in 5 setters - he loses concentration very easily and gets quite down on himself. He is also pretty erratic - plays one brilliant set followed by one where even I coud beat him I think Ancic will win this match - unless he is very tired from last week and Calleri has one of his good days (I'm hoping ) Btw - completely irrelevant, but he's totally gorgeous!

that's his/her loss You didn't mention Calleri's backhand! I remember when he beat Andre in Miami a couple years ago, man that was a clinic in how to have a perfect 1-hander.

Yes - that's true - but sadly the backhand is even more erratic than the rest of his game When it's "on" it is a thing of beauty though - I agree. Must admit I would love to be on Court 3 tonight - Calleri/Ancic followed by Acasuso/Blake....what a great line-up Sadly I have to work tomorrow though, so I'll probably sleep through both matches as they start at about 2.00am here!!
