Whenever he's not playing his best (which he shouldn't be expected to all the time), they use it as an excuse for the other player's achievements. It occurs even in matches where he wins convincingly and is mentioned in detail.
Edit: I'll add also that I haven't really noticed many Fed haters and that the threads related to him on MTF don't make any difference to what I think of him. (I enjoy watching him to an extent but don't really cheer him on).
For example, when he lost the final in Shanghai: Instead of the media congratulating David on his win, they commented extensively on Roger's loss. They were so distracted by all the records being broken, replaced, whatever, that they neglected to check out the action happening on court. Even the commentators were caught up.
