Venues/Surfaces for 2006 Davis Cup World Group 1st Round announced

I just noticed on the Davis Cup site that the venues and surfaces for the 1st round next year were announced today :

http://www.daviscup.com/news/newsarticle.asp?id=13552

Croatia begins title defence in Graz

Croatia will begin the defence of its Davis Cup by BNP Paribas title with a trip to Graz for its World Group first round tie against Austria. Slovak Republic, the 2005 runner-up, also faces an away tie in Rancagua against Chile.

The full list of venues for the first round of the 2006 Davis Cup By BNP Paribas World Group, to be played the weekend of 10-12 February, is as follows (subject to final confirmation by the ITF):

Austria v Croatia: Schwarzl Freizeit Zentrum, Graz, AUT, clay - indoors
Argentina v Sweden: Parque Julio A. Roca, Buenos Aires, ARG, clay - outdoors
Belarus v Spain: Football Manege, Minsk, BLR, carpet - indoors
Switzerland v Australia: SEG Geneva Arena, Geneva, SUI, clay - indoors
Germany v France: Gerry Weber Stadium, Halle, GER, hard - indoors
Netherlands v Russia: Amsterdam RAI, Amsterdam, NED, carpet - indoors
USA v Romania: La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, La Jolla, CA, USA, hard - outdoors
Chile v Slovak Republic: Medialuna de Rancagua, Rancagua, CHI, clay - outdoors

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

No real surprises. Spain facing another 1R tie away on indoor carpet could be an interesting tie. And Lleyton v Roger on clay. Maybe the clay might help Lleyton? I wonder if the Aussies will pick Luczak over Philippoussis for the second singles as Luczak seems to like clay. Mark seems to be a favourite of the Aussie Federation though.

A very favourable tie for Croatia. Athough on clay it is indoors which will be faster than outdoors on clay and suit indoor specialist Ivan Ljubicic.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 17 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.
Nadal 14 GS, 27 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 9 GS, 4 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.

I guess there are no surprises. I still think Holland should have tried to build an indoor grass court to put Safin and Davydenko off. It should be a very comfortable win for the Russians.

Austria v Croatia, Belarus v Spain and Germany v France are the hardest ties to call. A lot will depend on fitness and form coming into those ties. I think, by February, we shold have a much better idea.
