Friendship in tennis?

Hi there,
Since I've got the idea for my AAA ("another amazing article" - supposed to be a joke ) which is friendship in tennis, I cannot concentrate on learning for tests tonight, until I'm creating this thread . And the "search" options didn't give results to me.

Do you know the players on tour who are the real friends? Acts of friendship?

From what I've noticed, players don't want to talk about it too much, they say they try not to keep too close relations with the others, because it disturbs in playing that person in future. But the Argentinians stick together, so do the Spaniards.

What we have, is my favourite sentence by my favourite Marcelo Rios (Germany, end of 1998): "Having friends is to harm yourself. You can't have friends in tennis".
And by Elena Dementeva (Filderstadt, 2005) who said she wouldn't go for a dinner with other players before the match. Asked, what she would do after the match, she kind of avoided the answer, saying: "Then I am generally thinking about the next match or next tournament".

Thanks in advance, you can also PM me,
best greetings from Poland,
Nathaliia

Ljubicic and Thomas johansson are best friends on the tour. Ljubicic and Ancic are pretty close.

Re: Friendship in tennis?

Fernando Gonzalez and Nico Massu are good friends. And I think they are good friends to many of the Argentines.

Fernando said on a Tennis Channel show called Center Court with Chris Myers that he and Nico are competitive on court - but off court you have to be a good friend. And Nico once said that its tough to play Fernando, but they are professionals and can put their friendship aside during the match.

And how about Feli Lopez and Fer Verdasco. They've been close friends since they were younger.

Mardy fish seems close with every American player. It's as though they "share" him.

Re: Friendship in tennis?

I think that Marat is pretty much friendly with all of the players, with the exception of Roddick.

One of the reasons has to be his straight-forward way of thinking and his realistic attitude. A perfect example would be how classy he handled the triumph over Roger last year in Australia, even patting him on the back when he was walking off the court.

Also, I don't know how anyone could forget Lopez and Nadal, those two are so close that it's almost scary.

Can't think of any others at the moment, atleast not off the top of my head.

That picture of them looking like identical female twins gives me a the creeps. But, perhaps they qualify as "more than friends".

Re: Friendship in tennis?

Costa and Corretja came to my mind straight away, but already been said.
I guess in tennis respect is more appropriate then friendship, can't think of many real friends.
Malisse and Rochus perhaps.

Ah, yeah. I saw that in the FNAC when I was in Paris (I actually went to four book stores to look for it), but it was too expensive

Re: Friendship in tennis?

Grosjean is also friendly with Andy Roddick, when the two of them were both living in the general vicinity of Boca Raton, FL they were hitting partners and I've heard both of them speak quite highly of eachother.

So, obviously there is a tad more to it than just hitting a few balls between them.
