Tim Henman: Best Active Player Without a Major (SI.com, 11/30/05)

Best Never to Win a Title
Over the past eight months, Roy Williams (left) has won an NCAA title, Kim Clijsters a U.S. Open title and Yolanda Griffith a WNBA title, each shedding the nagging burden of being the best active coach or athlete in their sport to never have won the big prize. Here are the next names on that list as well as the best active athlete and coach in other major sports who've yet to win a title.

Tim Henman
Best Active Tennis Player Without a Major

Say this about men's tennis: the active players who should have won a Grand Slam by now have done so: Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, Marat Safin and even the teenager Rafael Nadal. An annual ritual, Henman whips Britiain into a lather during Wimbledon in his bid to become the first homegrown champion since Fred Perry. Then, inevitably, reality kicks in, Henman's limitations become apparent, and he falls short. Henmania they call this sadistic ritual. (And, as if to taunt his fans further, in recent years, Henman has also reached the semifinals of the French and U.S. Opens.) The depth of the Brits' support—and then, the depth of their disappointment—is, ultimately, admirable. Unfortunately, especially now that Federer is on the scene, this faith in Henman is likely to go unrewarded.

I still think Nalbandian is the best without a major.

I'll agree with that... and much to my chagrin, throw Coria's name in there too.

Tim Henman: Best Active Player Without a Dentist, maybe. No way is he the best without a slam. I'd vote for Kiefer, and not just because he's so unbelievably hot. I truly believe if he wasn't psycho, he could be a threat at a boycotted slam.

Nalbandian; Wimbledon final, US Open semi, French Open semi plus numerous quarter finals has slight edge over Tim; 4 times semi final Wimbledon, French Open semi plus US Open semi. Little in it, but as David has reached a grand slam final and was within a point of reaching another, I think he has a slight edge.

Henman?!

I love Tim, but he's not the best active player without a major. Heck, he's not even the second best active player without a major.

At his best, Tim fits the label, but he hasn't been at his best this year. Nalbandian is better right now (duh), but over the course of both their careers, I'd give Tim the nod.

C'mon, Lleyton!

Henman > Nalbandian so far. I don't count Nalbandian's Wimbledon final, a result that was the product of a ridiculously easy draw.

Re: Tim Henman: Best Active Player Without a Major (SI.com, 11/30/05)

They also put Amelie Mauresmo in there as the best active female to not have a title.

As for Tim, I don't think he ever could have won a slam unless he got a very lucky draw or unless all the top players died (a la Kracijek). In contrast, I could see people like Nalby and Gasquet winning grand slams even with the best players there and im not just sayin that cos they have both beaten Federer in the past year.

Andy Murray ~ Richard Gasquet ***David Nalbandian*** Rafael Nadal ~ Gilles Simon

Re: Tim Henman: Best Active Player Without a Major (SI.com, 11/30/05)

I think that nowadays he could be considered the best active player that deserves to have at least one Grand Slam or Master Cup won and didn't.

Also Kiefer, Rusedski and Novak. And actually Kiefer is the best between them

PAW Results 2010/2009/2008/2007/2006/2005:
Winner: / Stuttgart / Viña, Miami, Umag / Stuttgart / Viña / Davis Cup /
Final: / / Paris TMS / Sauipe, B.Aires, Monaco, Umag / Acapulco / Paris TMS / Tokyo
SF: / / Estoril, Shangai / / / / Stuttgart, Palermo
QF: Brisbane/ Umag, USOpen / / Australia, Nottingham, Olympics, Bangkok / Australia, Sauipe / / Kitzbuhel, Beijing

PAW Rank: 14

FITD Champ: Queens 2010 / Miami, Newport & Stuttgart 2009 / Hamburg & Kitzbuhel 2008
Suicide Champ: Johannesburg 2009
