Roger Federer to become #5 on the list of players with most weeks at #1...

Roger passes Andre Agassi this week, and since he is set to be the year end number one, he will also pass Bjorn Borg by next year and will follow:
1) Pete Sampras-286
2) Ivan Lendl-270
3) Jimmy Connors-268
4) John McEnroe-170

Also he has has the 3rd longest time as #1 player with 102 weeks, following Jimmiy Connors and Ivan Lendl at 157 weeks and 160 weeks.

If Roger goes through next year uninterrupted like this year, then he will become the longest consecutive weeks running #1, and as well likely going to pass John McEnroe on the all time list. And he is not even 25 yet.

Re: Roger Federer to become #5 on the list of players with most weeks at #1...

Just some precisions here:

Federer will pass Agassi for the sixth position in the total weeks list on Monday 9th January 2006 (102nd week). He would overtake Borg for fifth on Monday 6th March 2006 (110th week), if he is still there - this is not guaranteed as Nadal and possibly Roddick could overtake him by then.

As of today (8th November 2005) the total weeks list looks like this:
1. Sampras 286 weeks
2. Lendl 270
3. Connors 268
4. McEnroe 170
5. Borg 109
6. Agassi 101
7. Federer 93

He will pass Sampras for the third position in the most consecutive weeks list on Monday 16th January 2006 (103rd week). This list currently runs:
1. Connors 160 weeks
2. Lendl 157
3. Sampras 102
4. Federer 93

That's jumping the gun a bit, isn't it? That's 52+weeks. Don't be so anxious. A lot can happen in 52 weeks.

Yep, 26th February 2007 (to get the longest consecutive run) is an awful long way away. I wouldn't even like to think about it.

This is great news. I wonder where this feat ranks to him with all his other achievements (I think it is less to him than his 24-final winning-streak and the Wimbledon wins). Very nice!

I think it is wrong to compare Connors' streak with Lendl's, since they had that stupid 2-year counting period in the 70's. As a result, Connors maintained the top rank against Borg in 1978, a year at which Borg won both RG and Wimby.

there are a lot of threads similar to this true, but i think that's just because people are too lazy to look for the old ones, kind of like threads about rafa being the most succesful teen
his hair didn't look that different to me, a little shorter i guess

Nadal could interrupt him but Roddick is so far away from Federer and Nadal.

If Nadal doesn't take over #1 early next season (at least before the clay season), I don't see Fed losing #1 next year.
