Ljubicic secures last Masters spot with quarters winReuters
PARIS -- Croatian Ivan Ljubicic grabbed the last ticket to the eight-strong Masters Cup on Friday.
Ljubicic qualified for the semifinals of the Paris Masters by moving past Spaniard Tommy Robredo 7-6, 3-6, 6-1.
His main rival for the last remaining spot in the season finale from Nov. 13 in Shanghai, Argentine Gaston Gaudio, lost any hope when he was beaten 7-5, 6-0 by Czech Tomas Berdych in the Paris quarterfinals.
The other two players who still retained a theoretical chance, Robredo and fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, dropped out of the race by both losing in the French capital on Friday.
Ljubicic joins Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi, Guillermo Coria and Nikolay Davydenko in the Shanghai field.
Russian Davydenko lost to Czech Radek Stepanek in Paris on Friday but had already done enough to qualify by reaching the quarterfinals.
World No. 1 Federer confirmed his participation on Thursday after recovering from injury. Argentine Coria's qualification was announced the same day after Australian Open champion Marat Safin said he was withdrawing with a knee injury.
