Where is all the Davydenko hate coming from?

Not here on this forum, but in the press. I've seen several slams against Nikolay in different media

Tennis X Web site writes

It's bad enough that personality-deficient Russian Nikolay Davydenko will likely clinch the final open spot in the field over the exciting Ivan Ljubicic...

Ouch!

Neil Harman of the Times chimes in with this:

Comfortable association with fellow players on the tour has been hard to come by for Rusedski, although his popularity would increase eight-fold in the aftermath of a victory over Davydenko, arguably the least marketable commodity in the mix for a place in the Masters Cup in Shanghai this month.

Yikes.

Am I missing something about Davydenko? Is he unlikable or surly (like my Coria), or is all this vitriol being spewed at him simply because he has "no personality"?

Vs Sargsian earlier this year. There was a lot of suspicious backing for Sargsian, Davydenko won the 1st set 6-1 and then retired with a foot injury. A few days later he played DC and was perfectly normal.

Disrespectful remarks.

Davy is a hard working successful pro with decent strokes whose game might not be exciting but very efficient - not unlike many other players.

I guess that's not all that bad, since he'll almost surely play TMC and all the critics can only keep talking trash - like they say: money talks and bullshit walks.

Re: Where is all the Davydenko hate coming from?

Oh by the way most bookmakers dont pay out bets if under 1 set is completed. The fact that there was a suspicious amount being bet on Sargsian, plus the fact that Davydenko retired after 1 set made it seem suspicious.

I'm not saying he's guilty, I'm just telling you what I've heard.

As for his lack of personality, its true, but its a bit harsh he's had a good, consistent year and possibly deserves a place at the TMS

Apparently one only has a personality if they act up on court and make catty remarks off of it.

I guess that' my beef. If he's played well enough to get there, why begrudge him his spot in Shanghai?

Of course, the organizers are probably just miffed at all the potential withdrawals. Still, that's no reason to take it out on Davydenko.

Since when is that good enough a reason to make such harsh remarks about a person?

It's bad enough that young people nowadays idolize models and such blah, regardless of their skills (sleeping with people in powerful positions is not a skill IMO) or level of intelligence, at least he's good at what he does - isn't that what being a pro is all about?

I can't understand it, I have nothing against Davydenko, I'm neutral about him and I acknowledge his achievements this year.

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Yeah, I agree with you. Davydenko deserves being in Shanghai for all that he has done this year as a tennis player. However, speaking of a commercial point of view, it's not good that he plays the Masters Cup, because the crowd doesn't feel attracted to him - not only young people. Money has good and bad effects on professional sports, and this is a bad one. Fortunately, all that these people can do is "cheer" against him.

Same here. I'm not a fan, but I don't dislike him, and I can certainly admire what he's accomplished this year.

Most people feel like this about him. Few people love him, and few people hate him. The tennis business is always looking for good guys and bad guys (I am not gonna name any players here, so that the fans won't get resented). Neutral guys are not interesting for them.
