Tennis Magazine's 40 Greatest Players - The Top 4

Here's how the final four turned out. I take issue with Sampras being ahead of Navratilova or Graf because he never won all four slams.

1. Pete Sampras
2. Martina Navratilova
3. Steffi Graf
4. Chris Evert

2. Martina Navratilova
3. Pete Sampras
4. Chris Evert

at least they didn't put Evert in front of Navratilova or Graf

Lists like these always make me mad that Seles was stabbed Also, wasn't Pete supposed to be a writer for TM, or financial contributor in some way? Doesn't Nav even have a better Wimbledon record than he does (not to mention Slams)...

Perhaps men's and women's tennis should be placed in separate lists: they are too hard to compare. BUT... if they do consider them comparable, then Navratilova should be ahead of Sampras. Her resume is more well-rounded and has no significant weakness. She showed absolute dominance, remarkable longetivity, the highest achievement in both singles and doubles, and excellence on all surfaces (including all the slams).

This would be my final list as well. I would never rank Pete above any of these women.

Re: Tennis Magazine's 40 Greatest Players - The Top 4

Women's tennis is a joke. This is a disgrace to everyone. I'm disgraced. You know it.

Seriously, Safin has more talent in his pinky than any top female could ever dream of.
Not just Safin, but every male within the top 500.

This is like comparing olympic wrestling with the wwf.

Pure legends of Open Era :
Male : Borg (not on this list)
Female : Graf (very low on this list)
BS...

"I asked a bloke in the front row if he liked the serve-and-volley stuff," said Rafter. "He said he did but asked if he was going to get to see any rallies. 'Not today, mate,' I told him."

Barely in the top 20. Mind you, in the time they've taken to compile and publish this list, he's won two more grand slams, so I think he'd probably be up a few places.

I thought it was a silly list really, because it combined men and women, as was previously said. You cannot really compare these on a level basis.

Apparently Chris Evert is involved with this publication which might explain why she figures so highly on the list. I'd certainly put Borg in there before her.

Re: Tennis Magazine's 40 Greatest Players - The Top 4

for god's sake Sampras didn't even reach the FO final

Graf and Nav have both won all the slams several times, so they should top that list hadn't it been so incredibly biased towards men and americans
