Nadal started out a bit slow, but gained momentum and finished off Hanescu quite nicely.

Congrats Rafa.

Rafa was pretty rusty to start off with – uncharacteristic UEs. You could tell that he had shorter practice sessions than normal. Rafa’s movement was not 100% but it was not bad at all. Victor had some great serving but as the match progressed - Nadal’s level increased and Victor’s play level decreased and he started making more UEs.

Nadal has said that if it were a choice of doing well/winning at Madrid or playing in Shanghai, he would rather win in Spain. Therefore, I imagine that he will be running without really trying to save his knee for Shanghai.

Two non-play notes:
 Victor actually smiled when they were taking the picture at the net before the match. A rare sight indeed.
 Nadal had bands underneath each of his knees and we could see them because he was wearing shorts- not the capris. Supposedly, he will be wearing regular shorts for the rest of the year.

I hope Nadal is okay to play in Paris, too. He misses too many Masters events... he won't catch Federer doing that.

Hanescu should have won that tiebreak. He controlled it 3-0 then played a series of backhands so poor you would have thought he was learning the game.

Routine shots from Nadal and Hanescu couldn't get in position to hit a simple backhand in court. Just horrible.

The MRI has showed that the acute tendinitis continues, but he decided to play , and about his movements at the beginning of the match was a bit slow ( I think he was nervous as he usually is at the beginning of a TMS or a GS match and it seemed that he wasn't adjusted to the court due to his short practises the previous days ) , but after several games his speed was as good as it usually is and i think the tendinitis has hardly affected him in his speed. In the second he was already adjusted to the court..

Yep, Rafa started slow but that's understandable, no matches for weeks and no proper training sessions due to the knee. But in the 2nd set he got into groove. Vamos!!!!
