Arrow Questions about Grand Slam tennis...help please

I have a few questions about GS tennis;

1. Why r the tournaments in NYC, Melbourne, Paris and London and not in another city?
2. Is there a competition between the GS among each other?
3. Do the organising cities arrange more busses/ traines?
4. Did the terrorist attacks affect the amount of visitors?
5. Are there complaints from the people that life near a GS?

Could anyone help me with these questions? I need to research this for a project..

Thanks in advance!

Re: Questions about Grand Slam tennis...help please

1. Well, because all those cities have the biggest stages, I think..
2. Well, its not really competition between the GS's its more what people think about the GS's.
3. No idea, sorry
4. No idea, sorry
5. There are no residential areas near those stadiums, except for hotels and that sort of thing.

Most tennis-playing countries had their own championships, and it just so happened that these ones were held in the countries most successful in Davis Cup, and they became the most important ones. The importance of individual tournaments has evolved over time (for example, the Italian was arguable as important as the French at some point, and the Australian was often ignored by top players in the 1970s).

Not really. Governed by the ITF, they do tend to work as a unit, although each is certainly very individual.

Yes (at least for Wimbledon), but it's not so much the cities that organise them. It's the tournaments.

Which terrorist attacks do you mean, presumably New York? London tube bombings were in the week after Wimbledon this year. No idea, I think these things are probably in everyone's mind, but it doesn't necessarily stop them from attending a Grand Slam event.

Of course. Wimbledon have to be very careful about this, and it's one of the reasons they do not play on the middle Sunday, so that the surrounding area can have a day off from the fortnight of hassle they endure every year. And yes, SW19 a very heavily populated residential area.

Don't worry about it. And most of my answers only refer to London, I've no idea what New York or Melbourne are like as I've not been there (yet).

I'm sure there are people here who've been to all the slams who could make more accurate comments than mine.

The US Open also escaped the 9/11 panic by one week? So we can't really measure any immediate response because the next tournament has been a year away.

Yes but there are only a few buildings that's all. That's a "dead area" of Paris, almost outside of it. I mean RG's true neighbour is the Boulogne wood so...

Hewitt won the tournament that year and he originally planned to leave NYC later but changed his plan. He managed to leave US before the attack, otherwise, he would get stuck in US for a few days.

Re: Questions about Grand Slam tennis...help please

I can only answer for NY since I live there and go every year.

There aren't anymore buses or trains. The #7 train runs right by there, and runs very frequently so it isn't needed. There are private buses, however, that come from other outside the metro-NY area and nearby states hired by tennis clubs, sports clubs, etc.

As for the terrorist attacks - I didn't see any change - in fact, attendence is way up. As others pointed out, it happened right after the 2001 USO so by the next year, it wasn't front and center in people's mind.

The National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows Corona Park isn't in a residential area. Shea Stadium (for the NY Mets baseball team) is right across the train tracks. Mostly warehouses around there, but they are talking about making that area a sports complex area. I'm hoping they include an indoor tennis complex, but I know realistically that it will never happen.

Re: Questions about Grand Slam tennis...help please

regarding terrorist attacks, a sad and scary coincidence -

1. sept 11 2001 happened right after the USO
2. london bombings happened after Wimbledon
3. bali bombings right after the indonesian tourney
