Is AMS Madrid the less interesting Masters Series tournament for some players?

This year and the last one, many players who had been on the list of this tournament (top players especifically) finally withdrew from this, allegdly some injuries and other excuses, but then in Paris reappears most of this players... It's the second consecutive year that the organization of AMS Madrid has been dissapointed by this situation.

A post that deserves to be on MTF Hall of Fame soon:

I think it was just bad luck... I dont see a reason why Madrid should not attract the big boys...

Looking at some of the scheduling that's happened over the past few days and some other things that I've observed, I can see why a lot of players choose not to play.

Just the extremely obvious focus on money and seeming disregard for the players and what might be best for them. Obviously every tourney is a business of sorts and needs to make money, but this one is just off the charts it seems.

But to me the scheduling has been the most egregious thing. There are many players who I think have been disadvantaged severely by ridiculous schedules the first few days.

To be quite honest, this is the first tms for the year I'm not enjoying as a fan. It just seems like it is lacking something, I don't know what, just something that is making it less interesting than the others. Even the scheduling of matches seems off to me. Usually, I stay up and watch the matches on The Tennis Channel; however, for the past two days, I haven't really bothered.

Which players will reappear in Paris?
I think as always this last TMS will be another debacle in terms of absences of the big guns.

Both tours (ATP AND WTA) are just in a standstill right now until the Year-End Championships.

Madrid and hardcourt indoor sounded incompatible for me in the very first place

Re: Is AMS Madrid the less interesting Masters Series tournament for some players?

This tournament is just boring for some odd reason, the main attraction right now is Rafa and no one else. It's not the tournament atmosphere as much as it is the lack of depth in the Draw that's hurting it ... if Nadal were 100% healthy he would win this tournament pretty easily ... don't see anyone other than Roddick that would be capable of beating him ... it's the usual clay court suspects ... the same can be said for some NON-TMS events ... but yes ... this TMS is lacking something. Depth.

Re: Is AMS Madrid the less interesting Masters Series tournament for some players?

A possibility of a Federer/Nadal showdown would've made things more interesting. I think that's the primary reason for some people losing interest: too many top players out. That and maybe the fact that the event doesn't have a lot of history in the first place.

Given all that, I'm sure there will some exciting tennis played.

Re: Is AMS Madrid the less interesting Masters Series tournament for some players?

madrid suffers from the tough luck that most players are already tired by the time it comes...

personally, i think monte carlo is the most underrated masters...

This is the less interesting AMS for me too. IF Coria doesn't win, it's ok for me

Alot of the top players don't have much to play for as they've already secured their places in Shanghai combined with the end of season injuries.

It's still bang out of order, the top players should play the required events unless they have a valid excuse i.e injury, regardless of surface or schedule.
