Will Ferrero Qualify for Shanghai?

Code:
1	Federer 1245
2	Nadal 853
3	Roddick 548
4	Hewitt 498
5	Agassi 455
6	Coria 422
7	Davydenko	378
========================
8	Safin 346
9	Gaudio 344
10	Puerta 324
11	Ferrero 284
12	Nalbandian	278
13	Ferrer 274
14	Gasquet 274
15	Ancic 270
16	Gonzalez	270
17	Ljubicic	261
18	Johansson T	260
19	Robredo 258
I'm assuming Puerta won't be playing (drug allegations). That puts him out and immediately raises Ferrero to 10. If he can do well at the remaining events, he will maintain his position. I'm not sure if it is possible for him to overtake Gaudio.

Hewitt and Agassi may or may not be able to play. If more than one player from the top 8 in the race can't compete, Ferrero will be awarded a wildcard.

So, best case scenario, it is possible for him to qualify. Now I'm just wishing for some luck on JC's behalf

He'd have to win Madrid and do good in Paris....................that's a big order for Ferrero. He'd have to literally take that spot from Davydenko. I do not foresee Agassi missing the cup and as for Hewitt, I doubt he'd miss it too, but these day, who knows what's up with Hewitt.

Then I won't rain on the parade Best of Luck. I do like Ferrero and I think he is a good player. I'd much rather see Ferrero there than Gaudio just because I think Ferrero would be mentally stronger than Gaudio if given the chance.

As for Coria, I'd give Ferrero his place in a sec. Why? I love Coria, but for some reason, he hasn't been able to close out matches lately, so I don't foresee him winning a single match there which in my opinion equals a wasted spot. During matches at the Masters Cup, I'd like to feel that each player has a solid chance of winning. I've lost my confidence in Coria.

I agree. The matches will be played indoors (corect me if I'm wrong) and Ferrero has a much better chance than Gaudio indoors. Just seeing what he did this week at Vienna proves that he can still play on every surface. I love Gaston, but I really can't see him winning any matches in the group stages.

I know this sounds terrible, but I hope two players are injured and have to withdraw After all, JC's goal was to qualify for Shanghai in 05.

Re: Will Ferrero Qualify for Shanghai?

He's closer than I expected. Hopefully Juan Carlos avoids Nadal and Roddick in the Madrid draw and makes a good run there.

Are Safin and Federer not also question marks for Shanghai given their injuries? It'd be a shame to see any of the Top 8 have to pull out, but it may be a possibility considering how many of the leading contenders can't compete in Madrid, and that'd definitely benefit Ferrero.

Re: Will Ferrero Qualify for Shanghai?

Hmm.. I think Gaudio won't make it, he can't do anything on fast surfaces.
Coria shouldn't be underestimated, but who knows how his confidence is after the Davis Cup semifinals.
Davydenko is having a tough second semester, pledged by injuries, but he's dangerous indoors.
Puerta will be playing those tournaments, but I don't think he could go very far.
It depends on how well Ferrero and Nalbandian will do in Madrid and Paris. I think both still have small chances.
I don't think there will be any withdrawals. Agassi gave up playing Madrid because he wants to rest.

Federer seems quite certain he's be ready for Shanghai. But, I think there is still a big question mark my Safin's name. I don't think we'd have any idea until we see if Safin plays Paris.

Is Hewitt injured or is he home to support his wife and await the birth of his child? I'm figuring it's the latter. But who really knows. I hope his toe isn't a serious matter.

Re: Will Ferrero Qualify for Shanghai?

If anyone witdraws, I'm guessing it will be Safin, Agassi or both.

I can't find anything on wildcard entries, so I assume that it would just be the next highest ranked player in the race. If the wildcards aren't picked regarding race points, maybe they'd pick the best performed at Madrid and Paris?

Re: Will Ferrero Qualify for Shanghai?

Alternates are the next highest players in the race. I think they generally pick 2 of them for the TMC.

And yes, I think Safin is the most likely to not play in Shanghai at this point. We'll see what happens with Paris.

Re: Will Ferrero Qualify for Shanghai?

1 Federer - has been injured, and may not want to risk it getting worse, I mean what's more important, AO or Masters Cup?

2 Nadal - withdrew from Vienna due to injury? if it comes up prior to TMC, I'd say it he would forego TMC for AO.

3 Roddick - he'll be there for the money.

4 Hewitt - no chance of winning if the good players are there, hope he doesn't turn up - injury clouds also.

5 Agassi - only has so many matches left in him - if he feels up to it I'm sure he'll be there, otherwise he'll concentrate on his most successful slam - the AO.

6 Coria - I'm sure Carla would love a shopping holiday.

7 Davydenko - lots of Russians in China.

8 Safin - has a lot of points to defend from AO, and wouldn't want to risk missing it in 2006.

9 Gaudio - a likely starter.

10 Puerta - also deserves to start.

11 Ferrero & 12 Nalbandian - I wouldn't go making plans otherwise just yet if I was them.

Re: Will Ferrero Qualify for Shanghai?

Well, JC is just under 100pts behind Davydenko, with Madrid and Paris still to come. It seems like a tall order but he has, at least, hit some form in Vienna.

I'd still like to know if he's going to be seeded in Madrid. He's currently ranked 22 and there have been 5 confirmed withdrawels: Federer, Hewitt, Safin, Agassi and Gasquet. That puts him at 17 so he needs one more withdrawel to be seeded. If he's not seeded, he won't get a bye to the 2nd round and he'll have to play on Tuesday already. I'm not sure if he has enough time to recover from a 5-setter against Ljubicic and a 3-hour flight from Vienna to Madrid.

With Federer, Safin, Agassi and Hewitt returning in Paris, he has to do well in Madrid to qualify. Reaching the semis is the minimum requirement if he's to stand a chance. Also, this is all assuming that Davydenko doesn't get a good run at one or both of these tournaments. If JC overtakes Safin it doesn't help him because Marat won the Aus Open and Agassi and Coria are already too far ahead.
