Certainly agree with your last statement - that's a very good idea.
Not sure that players would abuse the system - for clay they can and do ask for marks to be checked, but it doesn't slow the game down unduly. Why would this be any different? It might even be quicker - the umpire wouldn't even have to get down to check a mark.
