Talk to me about Nikolay Davydenko

Seems I was not paying attention, then I turn around and he's #7 in the Indesit rankings. When/how did this happen? I really am just curious.

Re: Talk to me about Nikolay Davydenko

An already solid game that has brought him success on hard, clay and indoor courts in the past, in terms of a handful of optional titles, has been smoothed out this year and the patches of wild, erratic play that he went through in the past have largely disappeared. Many have been quick to anoint him as the Schuettler of 2005, although I don't think he's reached quite the same level of success and TBE would be mortified at the comparison, because Kolya is a far more entertaining player than Rainer thanks to the subtlety and variety of his play, and not at all because of the letters beside his name.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Davydenko entertaining?
He's so entertaining that people didn't even notice when he turned himself a top 10 player.
As entertaining as a thousand grams of carrot.

He's not as good as Schuettler was in '03 yet.

every year on the ATP there's always one '1 year top10 wonder, then never the same player after'
past champions of this are, as you pointed out Schuettler in 2003, but also Costa 2002, Haas 2001, M.Norman 2000, Lapentti 1999, Kucera 1998, Bjorkman 1997...

Davy 05, i enjoy watching him.

Re: Talk to me about Nikolay Davydenko

Novak was really the 1 year Top 10 wonder of 2002 - or in TBE parlance, the Mr. Nobody of 2002. This label has to go to players who have a career year with their highest ever ranking, are very consistent in a lot of big tournaments but never actually manage to break through and win a significant title. Costa doesn't really fall into that category, whereas Schuettler, Novak, Kucera, Bjorkman et al all do.

Re: Talk to me about Nikolay Davydenko

I've become a real fan of Nikolay. I understand his groundstrokes have always been one of the best but this year he's added a very effective serve to his game, which has helped him greatly on every surface. Even on hard courts, he's improved beyond recognition this year. Had it not been for injury, he could have had a run at Wimbledon.

I hope he keeps this up next year. He could be a dark horse for next year's Roland Garros title. And Russia potentially have the best Davis Cup team now.

Re: Talk to me about Nikolay Davydenko

I always think he is very smart on court. Very tactically aware. He's like Myskina in that respect. When she's on form she is always hitting the ball just in the right place to subtly control a point, keeping a margin for error, and can suddenly produce some great winners. He's better than Rainer, for me.

Re: Talk to me about Nikolay Davydenko

It's true alot of people think Nikolay is boring, but he's a great, very smart player and has risen, although quite quietly, to the top ten. If you want to know more about him then you should go to www.nikolay-davydenko.net, which is an unnoficial site run by my sis, but better than the official one, which is www.davydenko.com.

Re: Talk to me about Nikolay Davydenko

Why is his game boring? I like his game. Its different than other baseliners, he has some pressure in his shots...I dont know how to call it. It rocks

How can he be overrated? No one ever even utters a word about him.

And although Nikolay doesn't have the strength and talent of some players, at least he knows how to use his game and his mind to his advantage. He's come farther than some of those ridiculously talented players, who could be number one but are sidetracked by their own mentality.
