Who should get the last WC to play the MADRID AMS??

The last wild card is going to the player who receives more votes in the poll from "La Marca" journal. Vote there, and vote here, too, so we can discuss about it!

Re: Who should get the last WC to play the MADRID AMS??

My opinion on the candidates:

- Blake: Has already been given a lot of wildcards this year, and made a good climb in the rankings, thanks in part for that. But probably wouldn´t be a wasted WC.

- Martin: It would be a total waste to give him the wild-card. Besides, they´ve already given the other two wildcards to spanish players.

- Massu: High probability of wasting the wild card, if we consider how he´s been playing this year, but who knows... Has been a finalist here in 2003.

- Monfils: same thing as Blake, with the advantage that he´s much younger.

Agree about Martin, and about Blake and Monfils - they've both been handed WC after WC this year - doesn't seem right after awhile. Blake should get some WCs, but I don't agree about giving WCs to these young kids who everyone expects a lot from. They need to work their way up along with everyone else. I think it puts too much pressure on them way too soon, and they get discouraged when they don't win right away.

Don't know what Nico would do with it. But people don't realize that he also like Blake has had to come back from injuries. A hernia operation, followed by a stress fracture in his foot, and a serious ankle injury. So its taking him time to come back - and these things do take time. Also he has 250 points to defend this fall while Blake has none to defend. And he can't defend them if he can't play!

Nico has accomplished more than Blake though - and that should count for something.

But that's never been a criterion for getting a WC...I think it should be who people think will make the best use of their WC and add to the tourney. that's just my opinion

Usually I agree with you Debstah, but in this case, I don't.

I don't like WCs - I think WCs are ludicrous - always have. If they are given to deserving players - like a Haas or Juan Carlos who were top 5 players at a given point but coming back from injuries, etc., that would be great. But too often they are given to the home favorite who promptly losses in the first round. That doesn't add to the tournament. And tennis is an international sport with people watching around the world. What does most of the world care if Martin gets the WC? They don't. Or again, they are used for up and coming players - who aren't ready yet for a masters series event. Again, they promptly lose in the first round. Whoa...now that's exciting.

Madrid is already a circus with the models - now they've added to it with this poll. Let's have some standards here.

But since it is this way, I will vote for Nico. Of course. And he was 9th in the world last year....far higher than Blake has ever been.

Whoever gets it should turn it down, along w/all the top players. Scuttling of doubles ends the moment the singles players show solidarity w/the doubles guys. Boycott Madrid Immediately.

Yeah, sure they'll do it. In a selfish sport as tennis is.

Ok, but usually the tournaments give 2 wild-cards to countrymen, and one to a player that would attract attention from the crowd. Blake, Massu and Monfils are names that would.

Besides that, if it should go to a spanish player, why give it to Martin then? The guy is a regular clay court player, but what can he do in indoor Greenset? Also, he's already played a lot of AMS events, why not give it to a promising young player, Nicolas Almagro for example?

Maybe Spanish players attract a crowd in Spain?

Nicolas Almagro isn't exactly an indoor demon, and I can't really think of a Spanish player that is. Martin is a solid player and would be a good WC.

Well, at least people here should ignore it completely. Won't cost anyone any money, prestige, sanctions, etc...Or is everyone here just as selfish?

So then you have a big problem with the likes of Donald Young getting WCs? Generally the goal is to give a tournament draw a chance who wouldn't normally be able to get into the tourney. That's why someone like James got a lot of WCs, because he draws a lot of spectators to the tournaments. The TDs give WCs to people who couldn't get into the tourney any other way who they think will help make them money. When a TD is a part of the discussion, it's generaly about money

If Martin gets the WC he will lose in the first round for sure, unless he faces another clay-courter who can't play in indoor courts. For a player used to take part in challenger tournaments, I don't think he's really praying to recieve that WC. If he enters the main draw, the result in Madrid will necessarily count in his ranking points, so I don't think it would be a good deal for him.

Anyway, giving 3 wild-cards for fellow players is a bit unkind in my opinion, specially if there are foreign players who could do more. And don't forget that there will also be non-spanish people attending the tournament.
