In the Open Era, the players who had a Slam be their only win of the season

With Marat's injury (and maybe even if he wasn't injured), Marat looks like he will join this list. It is not a very common occurence for obvious reasons.

Here is the list:

PLAYER....................................SLAM WON.........................YEAR
Jan Kodes...............................Roland Garros.......................1970
**John Newcombe.......................AO, USO..........................1973
John Newcombe........................Australian Open...................1975
Brian Teacher...........................Australian Open...................1980
Richard Krajicek...........................Wimbledon...... .................1996
Guga Kuerten.............................Roland Garros.....................1997
Patrick Rafter.. ............................U.S. OPen.......................1997
Andre Agassi.............................Australian Open...................2000
Goran Ivanisevic..........................Wimbledon..... ...................2001
Thomas Johansson......................Australian Open..................2002
Albert Costa...............................Roland Garros....................2002
Pete Sampras...............................U.S. Open.......................2002
Gaston Gaudio.............................Roland GArros....................2004
Marat Safin...............................Australian Open....................2005

**Newcombe won two slams that year but did not win another title.

Incredible, didn't realize 3 of the Slam winners in 2002 only had the one title that year.

^Crazy huh? I didn't realize it was three either until I put together all the stats. I knew that Pete and Costa hadn't won other titles but I for some reason I thought that Tojo picked up another title someplace.

At least Gaudio had backed it up nicely by winning 5 clay titles in 2005, props to him

That bloody journeyman Sampras, ruining the image of the game with his inconsistency.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

This may have something to do with the Open Era starting that year (don't know if the stats are complete...), but it looks like Rod Laver only won one title in 1968, and that was Wimbledon.

And he wrecked his 1969 by winning the tournament in Philadelphia. His other four titles were the four majors.

Yes, the Open Era started in 1968 but I started counting from 1970 because that's when they started playing a fuller schedule so there was more of a chance to win other titles.

Sampras and Goran are interesting in this list because they won on their last legs. Agassi is strange because he wins his 1st tournie (AO) and then has a pretty goo year as he made the YEC and got to the finals in that but didn't manage to win another title.
