Are players paid in davis cup?

i have a question. in your country, players who play in davis cup are paid by the national federation?
in italy yes (i think it is an horrible thing to take money to defend your flag in an international league).

and you?

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

I would imagine the respective organisations pay their team: LTA pays Team GB. And I think that the ITF/Davis Cup gives the organisations the prize money?

p_r, it is not taking money to defend your flag as such-the money is to enable the players to make a living. They need to pay for everything remember, and at the end of the day, it is work.

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

sorry i don't think that play in davis cup (who many matches in a year could play? ten?) is "work". if you accept to play for your country, you play for free. if not, no one asks you to play. at least in the big nations. obviously this is my personal opinion expressed in a bad english...i suppose!

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

so you mean a prize money in case of victory... i think this is a good thing, but not take money before the match!

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

What's the problem in getting paid for playing for yours or any country? I see no problems. If you are going to be asked to practice, travel, do press conferences and win for your country why do it for free? I'm sure "your country" will be taking tax from your earnings anyway.

I agree that money shouldn't be involved.

Djokovic // Del Potro // Paire // Thiem // M. Zverev // Youzhny
Coric // Khachanov // Donaldson // A. Zverev // Bublik
Ferrero // Rafter

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

It's one weekend, I don't think money should be paid, expecially prior to the tournament.

I know some female tennis players have refused to play Fed Cup because of the money issue

And do you think footballers should play for Italy in the World Cup for free? If not, what do you think is the difference between a professional tennis player and a professional footballer?

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

Where does the ITF get this money from? Ticket sales of DC ties?

I was under the impression that the nation's federation paid for all the travel/expenses (hotel, etc.) for their team for each tie so the players don't have to put out money to partcipate in DC.

I can understand giving money to players ranked outside the Top 75 money because otherwise they would probably be playing a challenger that week for prize money. I'm a bit about players ranked 50-75, and I don't think anyone inside the Top 50 needs the money as they should all be earning a decent living on the tour. Just my two cents on the subject.

Since many /most look at this as their job- I expect they feel that they deserve/require the pay. Whatever works.

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

I don't see the players doing it all for free...or maybe they really deeply care about DC.

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

I know when the USA played Zimbabwe a couple of years ago, the American players were paid $100,000 for the tie.

Re: Are players paid in davis cup?

The venues where the Davis Cup is held profit. The ITF makes money to pay their employees. Why shouldn't the players be paid if the guys behind the scenes earn money?
