Federerís No. 1 Reign Now 7th Longest in History!

From ATPTennis.com, August 15, 2005:

Roger Federer today becomes the seventh-longest reigning World No.1 in ATP Rankings history (since 1973), surpassing the 80 weeks that Lleyton Hewitt spent atop the INDESIT ATP Entry Ranking. Hewitt held the ATP circuit's top spot for all but two weeks from November 2001 through June 2003.

Federer, who rose to No. 1 on February 2, 2004, today begins his 81 st week at No. 1 the same day he returns to the ATP circuit for the first time since his Wimbledon triumph in July. He plays James Blake tonight in the featured evening match at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati, broadcast on ESPN2 at 7:30 p.m. E.D.T.

Federer, who earlier this year also passed the number of weeks at No. 1 held by Stefan Edberg (72) and Jim Courier (58), now targets Andre Agassi (101 weeks) and Bjorn Borg (109 weeks), who are sixth and fifth respectively on the No. 1 leaders list (see chart below).

However, while Federer remains the leader of the INDESIT ATP 2005 Race, his once-commanding lead has been cut to 73 points after Rafael Nadal won the Rogers Masters title in Montreal on Sunday. The winner in Cincinnati earns 100 points; the US Open champion, the next tournament the two will play, reaps 200 points.

Federer and Nadal have been the standout players of the 2005 season and are the only confirmed qualifiers for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai. Both players have won three ATP Masters Series titles (the two are the only winners of ATP Masters Series tournaments this year) and one Grand Slam title.

Federer today also moves into sixth position for the most consecutive weeks as No. 1 in the INDESIT ATP Entry Ranking, surpassing the 80-week streak of Ivan Lendl (who also set a separate 157-week streak). Federer has held the No. 1 ranking since winning the 2004 Australian Open. If Federer holds No. 1 through the US Open, he will notch 85 consecutive weeks at No. 1 Ė the fourth longest unbroken reign as No. 1 in history.

TOTAL WEEKS AT No. 1

Player Tot. Wks.
Pete Sampras (USA) 286
Ivan Lendl (CZE) 270
Jimmy Connors (USA) 268
John McEnroe (USA) 170
Bjorn Borg(SWE) 109
Andre Agassi (USA) 101
Roger Federer (SUI) 81
Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) 80
Stefan Edberg (SWE) 72
Jim Courier (USA) 58
Gustavo Kuerten (BRA) 43

Well done Roger! The main (and only) danger will come from Nadal. The harder for him will be to keep it until the beginning of next clay season. Then Rafael will have a massive amount of points to defend.

Re: Federerís No. 1 Reign Now 7th Longest in History!

It's slightly misleading:

"Roger Federer today becomes the seventh-longest reigning World No.1 in ATP Rankings history (since 1973)"

sounds like it's referring to the consecutive weeks record, but it's not. It's just as well the article does mention the consecutive weeks further on.

Longest streaks:

1. Connors 160
2. Lendl 157
3. Sampras 102
4. Connors 84
5. Sampras 82
6. Federer 81* (can't lose it before end of USO, 84 weeks)
7. Lendl 80
8. Hewitt 75
9. McEnroe 58
10. McEnroe 53

Re: Federerís No. 1 Reign Now 7th Longest in History!

tennis has changed a lot since Pete dominated. Federer faces much tougher opponents in almost every round. if he can't eclipse the Android's accomplishment, no-one can.

Q. When you've played as few matches as you have over the last two, three months, did you ever lack motivation to go out and practice?

ANDY RODDICK: Motivation? No. I enjoy what I do. I enjoy what I do. You know, I've never been one to, you know, blow off practice or, you know, do anything like that.

You know, I'd be lying if I said I'm looking forward to practicing the next two days as opposed to playing here. That part is gonna suck...(2010 Aegon Championships)

Re: Federerís No. 1 Reign Now 7th Longest in History!

Federer is going to have to create a cushion before the end of the year of at least 150 race points which will translate into a lead of 750 entry ranking points going into next year. Even then, the lead will be tenuous as Nadal has a lot of points to gain at the AO and then Roger has to defend 330 race points or 1650 entry points in Rotterdam, Dubai, IW, and Miami. If Federer can hand on to the #1 heading into Miami, I think he will be #! after Roland Garros but would probably have to win Wimby. This is all depending upon the fact tha Nadal continues what he is doing now.

I think Roger can accomplish this ...it will be hard with Nadal coming up, but I think he
can do it! I hope that he can! He has worked hard and it would be an awesome
accomplishment!

I don't think Fed can do it cuz he likes to take a bunch of weeks off a time and then play crappy.
