Have I been giving Ljubicic's Tennis Game too much credit??

Ljubicic started the year so strongly that I estimated in earlier posts that he would finish the year in the top 8. Now, a couple of months later, he is being kicked out extremely early in tournaments by players he should be able to defeat. Have I given his game too much credit? Or is he a head case? Why isn't he in the top 8?

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

I think Ljubicic will continue to be in the top 10 with his game especially if he can hit his forehand well, and he can probably move up because he doesn't have many points to defend from the Grand Slams.

I guess Roddick must be the greatest player to ever play the game.

That was not a big win, that was a expected win, Agassi was old, and Ivan had plenty of game to beat Roddick, as we have seen in the last 2 matchs they played, you can even go back to Indy 2004 or USO 2003.

reason i bring up with americans is- "Croatia has no chance"

Ljubicic, love him or hate him, has made sensational progress in a year. It will be intriguing to see how he does in slams though.

Mike, I called him an awful player to you before, but you do know I was joking

Exactly. Team Croatia were treated like war heroes in their home country for defeating the US team in the first round of DC. Meanwhile, the USA's loss didn't even register a blip here; a yawn and a shrug. Kind of like a soccer match.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

I'll bet 99.999999% Americans don't know and don't care who Ljubicic is. Tennis is not big here, everyone knows that, but Roddick's Q rating is actually pretty high for a tennis player.

Still, in terms of street recognition, the US is still Agassi/Williams territory here.
