Hmm. They're quoting Tarpischev again, who is not exactly a reliable source...

Re: Marat withdraws from US Open (according to German press release)

If this is true, it will be a great loss for the US Open. Marat brings colour to every tournament he contests...

From his official site so don't panic please:

05.08.05 Marat News

Marat is fine and so is his knee. The treatment has gone well despite reports to the contrary circulating from the Russian Press. Marat has been practising in Bologna since Monday 01/08 with Davide Scala of Italy. Davide's claim to fame - Marat beat him in the 1st round of qualifying for the French Open in 1998 - the year Marat went on to beat Andre Agassi in the main draw.

Marat has been practising on clay to get himself physically fit. He is staying in Bologna instead of going to Valencia and tomorrow Saturday Peter Lundgren will join him. On Monday Marat will start practising on hardcourts.

Thursday 11/08 Marat and Peter will fly to Moscow for Marat to pick up all his clothes etc and then on Friday 12/08, they will fly to Cincinnati for the Masters Series Cincinnati.

Re: Marat withdraws from US Open (according to German press release)

just found this on europsort.com he should be good for the us
Safin to be ready for US Open

Marat Safin should be fit for next month's U.S. Open after undergoing keyhole surgery on his left knee, Russia's Davis Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev said on Wednesday. Safin, troubled by pain in his left knee for the last two months, had a small operation this week in Italy to repair a ligament .

"Marat has already begun a rehabilitation process and he should be ready to resume playing before the start of the U.S. Open," Tarpishchev told Reuters.

The injury has forced the world number five to miss this week's Davis Cup quarter-final between Russia and France at Moscow's Olympic Stadium.

The third grand slam of the year begins at Flushing Meadows in New York on August 29.

Re: Marat withdraws from US Open (according to German press release)

I am
I was watching Eurosport News this morning and it said Safin wouldn't play the U.S Open in their headline section on the bottom of the screen, but most of the posts here suggest he'll play in New York.
I hope he's fit enough to play in New York.

Yes, Marat must come to the US OPEN. He's too colorful, we can't do without him
(or his press conferences!)

I don't understand why he'd make such a big decision 3 weeks out. You'd think he'd wait til the very last minute to decide.

He didn´t decide yet. In fact, he is suposed to play US open. There have been some confusion after something Tarpischev said and was published by the russian news agency RIA Nowosti As some people here pointed out, what Tarpischev says is not allways "accurate"
