What could the ATP do to help YOU appreciate doubles more?

I am interested to hear individuals specific ideas. They could be small changes, or huge re-vamps, I think it would be worthwhile to hear different points of view. Please feel free to comment if you feel the recent scoring and ranking changes will attract you (or not).

I think the ATP ought to have more material concerning doubles, on www.atptennis.com They have recently inserted a 3 line 'column' wherein they comment on the duo of the month or something, but this really is not enough in my opinion.

Perhaps additionally, they could provide a head-to-heard search service, where the public can see if certain teams have played each other before and/or whether two players have contested a doubles match before as well.

In the recent edition of Australian Tennis Magazine, the president of Tennis Australia wrote a moderately sized piece on how the magazine hopes to promote doubles, denoting his love for the game etc blah blah blah. However, despite being the first issue since Wimbledon, apart from that article, I don't think there was any other mention of Stephen Huss' Grand Slam doubles triumph. They listed only the top 5 doubles players, and did not display any of the Wimbledon doubles draws (MD, WD, XD). It just seemed a little hypocritical to me, and I am considering writing in with my points of view.

Anyway, as the poster once said to the forum: "Discuss".

Re: What could the ATP do to help YOU appreciate doubles more?

Sometimes these things are just a matter of individual preference. the concept of doubles tennis is fine to me (it's still tennis), but I enjoy individual efforts ---it's one of the most significant things I enjoy about tennis. in addition, i feel atp/others don't build up personalities or rivalries as much on the doubles tour. i know i would watch doubles a little more if some of the more interesting matchups took place --say Federer+coria against nadal+safin on clay. but even then, for some I suspect singles is more interesting because there is no crutch to lean on

Draw sheets at tournaments need to have info on the doubles players, head-to-heads, etc.

Also, stop putting doubles matches as the last matches of the day like they are an afterthought or something.

Re: What could the ATP do to help YOU appreciate doubles more?

The best thing they could possibly do would be to show more doubles on tv. The reason singles players are more well known and popular is because people see them on tv, see their game and become a fan. They then want to see that player play, both singles and doubles. If doubles was on tv now people would see doubles players and become fans, then they might go to tournaments to see doubles matches.

The current changes to scoring will just reinforce in the public's mind that doubles is an additional filler that isnt as important as singles. And the rules that try to encourage singles players to play doubles doesnt acknowledge the fact that singles players are more popular because they get more exposure on tv.

LaTenista and Experimentee, thank you for the sensible comments. It's suggestions such as yours that can and should work.

Thoughts such as "Federer and Safin vs Agassi and Nadal" anger me. How do the ATP have control over that? And do you SERIOUSLY want to see that? You think that'll make good doubleS?

Re: What could the ATP do to help YOU appreciate doubles more?

I think that maybe there should be some more coverage of it on tv and in newspapers/magasines which possibly would not happy. Also, like latenista said; not have the matches at the end of the day. I don't think that top player participation really matters.

Promote it more, period. At tournaments where doubles is hyped and promoted, a good number of people stick around and go to the side courts for the matches. Advertise it, pump it up, make it sound fun.

Advertise doubles, or try and train younger players in doubles as well as singles.
