Best 5-setter EVER ?

Krickstein-Connors ?
Borg-McEnroe ?
Agassi-Rafter ?

Other question : Which HUGE five setter do you wish you had the opportunity to see ? I wish I could have seen Philippoussis 20-18 win at Wimbledon a few years ago or McEnroe's win over Wilander.

Re: Best 5-setter EVER ?

Davydenko-Robredo at this year's RG was one that will live down the ages.

Either Edberg v Chang at the 92 US Open, or that 5hr31min marathon between Corretja and Hernan Gumy at RG one year, 98 I believe.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Re: Best 5-setter EVER ?

Yes, Borg vs McEnroe, the Wimbledon final 1980 was certainly one of the best five set matches ever. Alone the fourth set tiebreak which ended 20-18 to McEnroe was probably one of the best ever (hard to say).

However, there's plenty of room for other nominations, out of personal bias I always liked the Stich vs Muster Davis Cup match in 1994 on clay. Unfortunately it went the other way than I would have needed it, but it was still great tennis by both and dramatic until the end in the fifth set. Special Davis Cup tension between Germany and Austria, Muster doing a few clown moves and being the petulant ass that he could be (even more on home soil) and Stich, in contrary, being untouched by Muster's antics and acting like the coolest person ever did the rest to make it interesting enough for me.

Becker vs McEnroe in Davis Cup in Hartford also wasn't too shabby.

still... by far not the end of the list, I hope lots of other suggestions are coming...

I always wanted to see the Gilbert vs Stich US Open match (unfortunately Stich lost it again in five sets), going in a 5th set tiebreaker to Gilbert. Why? Because I would have found this match intriguing, I didn't see Gilbert so often play and it would have been against my favourite player from these days.

Also, again purely personal interest, I would have liked to see two other Stich five set matches:

Gustafsson vs Stich, Stuttgart outdoor 1993 (yes, you guessed right, Stich lost it again)

Krajicek vs Stich, Stuttgart indoor 1995 (yes... another final and another loss for Stich in five)

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Re: Best 5-setter EVER ?

Todd Martin vs Carlos Moya 00 US Open 4th round. The 1st 2 sets were extremely long (over an hour) and could have gone either way. There were bad calls and Both players had missed opportunities, both sets went to tiebreakers and both were won by Moya. Martin came back and finally broke Moya in the 3rd, and destroyed Moya so much that he tanked the 3rd. 4th set was extremely close and went to another tiebreaker. Martin came through in the 5th to win 6-2 in a match that went past 1:00 AM. The match was filled with a ton of emotion and energy and the level of tennis was very high.

Skoff- Wilander at Davis Cup
Muster- Stich at Davis Cup
Corretja - Gumy at RG
Canas - Henman at AO
Wilander - Lendl at US Open
Rosset - Arrese at Olympics
Krickstein - Edberg at Aus Open
Rios - Zabaleta at Hamburg

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

For me it was Goran v Pat at Wimby

How many times must we of shot nerves witness the undoubted pain & suffering of muppets everywhere before we stand up against the cavemen??

One muppet, who wishes to remain anonymous, has this to say: "You know, I uhhhh cannot stay all the time at the you know, base of the line. Too much uhhhh pression."

It is your turn to help - The "Save A Muppet Foundation" needs you!
