RG lights & sliding roof

Paris Is Pick In Olympic Speculation

By Eugene L. Scott
06/03/2005

The chatter at Roland Garros does not always center on Court Central. Current conversations include the heated dialogue over where the 2012 Summer Olympics will be staged. The finalists are London, Paris, Moscow, Madrid and New York.

The not-so whimsy poll conducted by TW here at the French Open suggests that Moscow, New York and Madrid have no chance. London and Paris are in a dead heat with Paris picked to win in a photo-finish when the announcement comes, June 6th in Shanghai.

The reasons? The IOC won't reward New York when its stadium controversy puts the IOC in the middle of a bid city's quarrel, clearly a place the IOC has no interest in being. Barcelona was a too recent host of an Olympics for Spain to be selected so soon again. Moscow is, well, Moscow, rife with unsettling political and social unknowns.

London loses by the proverbial eyelash for being too closely identified with America, not a PC venue of choice with most IOC Committee voters. On the merits of the bids themselves, however, London apparently would have won in a walk. Thus Roland Garros' proposed stadium with a sliding roof and lights for night play will have a new showcase tournament in 2012.

Great news, every new stadium should include such features.

However, why would they include New York given that London statement?
