Ferrer doesn't think he can win slam

Ferrer not optimistic about Slam breakthrough

Quote:
World No. 3 David Ferrer, who reached his first Grand Slam final at the 2013 French Open, does not believe he has the capacity to win a Grand Slam.

The 31-year-old is known to be humble but also realistic. He has losing records against the Big 4 of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Roger Federer.

“No I don’t think so,” Ferrer responded when asked by Sport360.com whether he could win a major in 2014. “Rafael, Novak, Andy and Roger, for the last five or six years they’re the ones. Maybe this year Roger didn’t play so good in the important moments, but I think in 2014 it’s going to be the same story for the others and that Roger can win another Grand Slam and will be better than last year. After that, there are a lot of young players like (Milos) Raonic or (Grigor) Dimitrov or (Bernard) Tomic, maybe this year they can break through. They have a very good future, I don’t know if this year they’ll be in the Top 10 but they have a good future.”

Ferrer, who just split with his coach of nearly 15 years, Javier Piles, has modest goals for 2014.

“I think every year it’s more difficult to be in the Top three, Top four or Top 10," Ferrer said. "I will be 32 years old next year, and I think it’s important not to have any big injuries. My goal is to stay amongst the top players in the world, to be Top eight or Top 10 in 2014—that would be a good result for me.”

Probably very satisfied right now with his last 2 years, likely heights he never thought he'd reach, time to slow down and ease in to retirement.
Nothing but respect has been earned by ferrer!

It's only realistic. He's a mentally tough grinder playing a spanish percentage style, lots of netclearance and margin for error game. He knows this. He;s self aware and has maximised every last drop of his limited talent to achieve the most he could, which was a masters series title and a grandslam final with a good draw on his favourite surface.

And all think the same

Winner mentality. Good for the game!

In all seriousness: Everyone knows he will never win a slam. It didn't happen during his vulturing peak (I'm not the one coming up with those words), so it's not like it's going to happen now. And, as much as I like the dude and his game, I think it would be pretty much a wasted slam. He deserves many MS1000s, but not a slam. He just doesn't have what it takes to win one, in my opinion.

Re: Ferrer doesn't think he can win slam

Can't say I blame him. He's an amazing player, but he's made so many deep runs in slams and is completely outmatched by Djokovic or Nadal when he gets there. That's gotta be chipping away at his confidence.

Despite he actually admitted he is not good enough to do so, did anyone notice the monstruos shade he threw on Mark Lenders at the same time?

Re: Ferrer doesn't think he can win slam

Journalists seem to like asking him about whether he can win a slam - probably so they can then criticise him for not believing in himself enough. Of course if he said he was going to win a slam, then he'd be mocked for being unrealistic - he can't win!

I've always liked Ferrer's honesty though. He knows his limitations in terms of winning a slam against the big 4, but that doesn't stop him working hard to maximise his game. He'll be able to walk away from his career with no regrets about what he's been able to achieve.
