Re: Who is the greatest player in the Open Era with one Grand Slam?

Chang is definitely in the discussion, in terms of career. He was never close to being a dominant force, but was thereabouts for a long period.

1-3 in Grand Slam finals (including 3 different GS). Youngest ever male slam winner and youngest ever top 5 ranked male player, but peaked in the rankings about 7 years later. 1 YEC final. 7-2 Masters final record. Was a big public favourite during the 90s (I remember him on Energizer ads and Sesame Street). He also went 34-24 in ATP finals, with 12 years between his first and last titles (including 3 Indian Wells titles). 13 GS QF or better, 8 GS SF or better. Finished in the Year End Top 8 for 7 years in 1989 & 92-97, including a Year end 2 & 3 back to back, where he failed to win a GS. 662-312 career record. 14th all time leader in career earnings (despite retiring over a decade ago).

He also played in a really strong era as well.

David Ferrer
Tomic Robredo Djokovic

Past Player: Rafter Davydenko Kucera Arazi Hewitt Kuerten El Aynaoui Laver Bjorkman Clement Mecir O. Rochus

Shame to see Carlos Moya not even in the poll, though his non slam career was a bit underwhelming

um,
.....
I'll try speaking very slowly so you can understand, count from the top.... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 ... 8 - Moya, listed .

If you wish to vote just check off 'Moya' option, on the left hand side with your mouse. Use a left click.

Re: Who is the greatest player in the Open Era with one Grand Slam?

Stich was probably the most naturally talented out of the 12 players on this list, and the biggest underachiever IMO. He was one of the most technically versatile players I've ever seen, and was like a noticeably better and upgraded version of his compatriot Haas. He had good results on all surfaces when they were more polarised than they are nowadays.

Even in terms of achievements I would definitely rank him above his fellow Wimbledon champions Krajicek and Ivanisevic.

Still in terms of achievements Roddick's consistency and results over a long period make him pretty difficult to beat here.

Re: Who is the greatest player in the Open Era with one Grand Slam?

Roddick, for sure. Unfortunately, he is also among the dumbest.

At his best he had two of the biggest weapons in the world. He sought out more consistency. And when he got too passive he looked to be more complete. Somewhere along the way, he lost the plot.

Obviously a lot of that rests on his bouts with Federer. I don't even know why people bother bringing up Nadal etc. It was really just that guy.

Nonetheless, he was a big name on hard and grass, a contender at two of the four Majors, variously, deceptively consistent at the AO, and just in case you couldn't stand seeing so much of him, he did you a favor by taking a few months off during the clay season.

I'd probably go with Ivanisevic after that. The Muster mentions must be a preferential thing.

Cash, then Krajicek for me. Both those guys were plagued by injury, but in terms of their peak level, and their all-round game, I would put them on top.

I think "greatest" shouldn't just be about total career wins, dollars, or even things like number of GS semis and finals.

Agreed. It's a shame he decided to go for consistency over power. He tried to develop into an all-court player, but it just was not his style. His best bouts vs. Fed were the ones where he pulled the trigger 24/7.

Wonder what he could have accomplished if he stayed a ball-basher?

Who am I kidding probably nothing more than he has already accomplished

I support Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Del Potro.

Why? Because I love tennis plain and simple

Re: Who is the greatest player in the Open Era with one Grand Slam?

Voted for Roddick but it was a close run thing and he got the nod due to the emergence of the Fed era.

Muster deserves a bit more support was a gun on clay could well have won more than one French title and was competitive elsewhere.

Goran could lay claim to having the best serve on this list.

Muster best on Clay

Cash the best net game

Pat Cash also had a love hate relationship with the tour for part of his career.

Del Potro is included in the poll but he will hopefully win more majors so his eligibility is ambiguous.
OMG.

Did you forget Pat Rafter? *Weeps* I'll donate to this site in bundles if you guys ban him? Any moderators? You guys can run on a faster server. Please?
