In some aspects of the game, he is.

In '04 Federer was winning rallies that he should have lost due to his insane reaction time and skills, much like Nadal is his younger years, but now they have a superior game (much more noticeable on Nadal ofc).

If Federer said '06 or later, then I would say he is crazy as well, but '04 I can see what he means.

But no athlete had the year Novak Djokovic had. No athlete was as consistently superb, January through November. No athlete was as complete in all the aspects of his or her game (...) the best on all surfaces: indoors and out, hardcourt, clay, and grass. No athlete, week in and week out, faced the level of competition he did: men’s professional tennis, as gets said at the start of every big televised match—because it’s true—is in a golden age. (...) And while Federer had some year (2006), he accumulated only about half the A.T.P. point total Djokovic just amassed.

Rafa fan here but it would be interesting to see Fed win this. It would definitely go a long way in protecting his slam count and would make their rivalry something other than a completely one-sided slogging. This match probably will end up meaning more in retrospect than people realize. For Fed it needs to be now or never. It's probably his last stand (one of them at least) to bolster his slam total. Rafa wins this and has that much more momentum going into RG and at that point Roger might as well kiss his GOAT slam total status goodbye.

I wouldn't mind seeing Wawrinka win either, would be nice to see someone beyond the big 4 take the gold for once.

EDIT: On 2nd thought, Rafa might "just" need 4 to catch Roger but he's going to need 5 to surpass him and completely erase any doubt about who the GOAT is. I still think he could do it with Fed winning AO though.

Re: Federer: ''I'm a better player than in '04, I believe I can win the Australian Op

Back in his prime, he didn't need a coach, didn't need to scout his opponents, didn't need a drop shot - he could go out and play instinctively, adjusting mid-match if needed, confident in the knowledge that no one could match his best.

Now, he needs every edge he can get. He's had to add the drop shot - a shot he disdained before. His movement is nowhere near when he was in his prime. He can't hang from the baseline with the true contenders. The confidence that he got from winning his first Wimbledon (after all the talent was always there/ still is there) that make everything click into place is now shaky.

Federer plays a lot better now than in 2013. Thats for sure.

But the court is a bit faster as well as the 2 last years... The court speed changed over those last 10 years at many places plus the other players are better now than in 2004 in my opinion. Hard/ Impossible to compare.

What do you clowns think he's supposed to day? That he's declined and gotten worse which immdiately gives any of his opponents a psychological boost?
