The short form explanation for Vilas being number 1 is in the document VilasNo1Explanation.doc. But the project extended to the entire period 1973-1978. Many players have in fact a better ranking than their recorded one, others have a lower ranking. Many names are not even ranked in the ATP database, although they earned points. This was done entirely with the original ATP ranking system, no modification to historic facts of the time. The initial study concerning the category of tournaments is present along with the more acceptable study that does not alter any category originally used by the ATP, even though it is incorrect. In both accounts, Vilas is number 1 in 1975.
The study even presents a scenario in which no error is corrected, but rather focuses on some weeks in which no rankings were published. It is important to note that Vilas is number 1 even in this case, in which no actual error (although there were many) is corrected. The ATP missed this fact at the original time, and now refuse to accept it because technology did not permit them to detect this back in 1975. Even though, 2 years later, in 1977, they detected Borg becoming number 1 for a short period of time, and the periodicity of the rankings increased.
This is now for all of you to judge. The work done is impartial, if the tennis public considers this an injustice made to tennis, let them speak now and decide if the original rankings need to be correct or remain at their historical incorrect values. I am not the judge of history, tennis fans are, it is all your sport.
Re: Guillermo Vilas calculated as 1975 World Number 1 [PRELIMINARY]
Good Vilas was robbed of the #1 in 1977 by the ATP, which makes today's ATP seem honest  No surprise he was robbed in 1975 too.
He's also been robbed by history, as his clay run was ended by an illegal racket while Nadull got his record with basically the modern equivalent of that racket. to think they used to ban rackets for creating too much spin
Definitely injustice here, but I doubt he was purposefully robbed. ATP were trying to make $$$$$, no surprise here. Having the Top Ranked player compete in a separate tour to all his main rivals offered a complication, which they tried to solve by having his tournaments be better known. When all that failed, they at least considered making them better known through the rankings. Eventually, all their plans failed and they had to ban all IPA tournaments from the rankings in 1976, which they did.
We shouldn't judge history so harshly. True, mistakes were made, but ATP really did learn from this in their struggle to make tennis better. In 1977, they sold their main tournament at Tucson/Palm Springs (which is held today at Indian Wells) to the Grand Prix and this minor battle has helped the GP take over most winter tournaments in 1977, weakening WCT to the point of merger in 1978.
The premise of this discovery is the fact that a rule determining the category of tournaments was not respected when it came to the newly formed Independent Players Association staring Connors, the 1975 year-start world number 1. For promotional purposes only, the tournaments have been artificially upgraded by one category, although in most cases the upgrade was unjustified in the quality of draw and prize money, which were the primary rule keepers of the time.
It was a pre-ATP tour consisting of several US tournaments. Just like the Grand Prix and the World Championship Tennis tours they were aiming to creating a great competing tour, but have not received the popularity they aimed for.

Amazing work like always Slasher
I read sometime ago something about Mr Puppo trying that the ATP review the ranks but I never guess that you and Litotes were into that here is the link if you want to see it

I really wanna say I don't care, but it is kind of interesting, although I really don't care. lol J/k. Nah, was more than a decade before I was born and know nothing about the player or players, but it's interesting I suppose.

May have been so in 1973, where mathematically, bonus points are not in the rankings. After 1974, no player can achieve their year end ranking point count without bonus points, again, mathematically.
Re: Guillermo Vilas calculated as 1975 World Number 1 [PROJECT DRAFT COMPLETE]
The final draft is ready. We are almost ready to send everything to the ATP. Wish us all good luck, it is needed here!
In regards to 1977, it is also in the project. Connors was mathematically and validly world number 1. Ironically, Vilas was the one advantaged here with 10 points for the unfinished final of the spring Johannesburg tournament (between him and Borg). Sorry to those hoping this was an error, but we want to correct history, not change it in our image.
MTF will also have access to the rankings calculations for 1975-1978 (1973 and 1974 are already available) in the Rankings Database, but not until the project is on ATP's table and being discussed. Privacy is essential right now. Stay tuned.
