Federer has definitely benefited from court homogenisation, but mostly on clay. He is not a grass/indoor specialist by any stretch of the amagination.
Agree with this mostly. It's arguable that the change of surface at AO in 2008, which provided a slower, higher bounce did not really benefit him.

Federer has won more outdoor hard majors than he had grass, or indoor hard Wtfs. Of course, there's two a year so he has more chances. But a guy with nine outdoor hard majors: that ain't no grass specialist.

The ATP just can not do that with clay. It wrecks clay tennis. 2011 Roland Garros, was a joke.
I agree with everything, except your bit about 2011 RG. If my memory serves me correctly, it was the balls that were changed and not the courts. The balls were very, very light which made it seem so fast.

Re: "Speed up the courts and general court speed Thread"

Miami seems to be faster this year. Definitively faster than the two previous years. Many aces and fewer break points?

When did they change to this very slow Laykold surface? 2007, when it became purple?

Why exactly did they slow down in the first place?

To be fair, grinder serve bots fail to meet their own delusional expectations as warriors and "Hall of Famers".

Because the real tennis fans did like the servebotting they had to witness on fast surfaces in the 90s.

Monaco - Del Potro - Nadal - Wawrinka - Robredo - Dimitrov - Chardy - Berdych

Re: "Speed up the courts and general court speed Thread"

How are the courts in Tokyo and Beijing? Last year the Asian swing was really fast, but how about this year? Shenzhen seemed quite fast, but haven't seen anything from Tokyo and Beijing yet. The stats look like they are playing on clay. What is the truth?

Re: "Speed up the courts and general court speed Thread"

Yes, the courts are definitely slower again. Next week in Shanghai won't be much different. The Aussie tournaments in January will probably be also slowed down.

And it looked so promising a year ago.

Re: "Speed up the courts and general court speed Thread"

Robredo-Seppi last week in Shenzhen: 156 minutes with 2 breaks and 7 breakpoints. And most were in one service game.

Robredo-Seppi this week in Beijing: 140 minutes and counting with 8 breaks and 38 breakpoints.

Just saying.

The weather in Beijing is pretty cold, but it's still quite a difference.

12C in Beijing. The temperature difference between that and Shenzhen is greater in terms of effect on serve than the difference from slowest clay to a fast hard court.
