Clay Season - Effects for Doubles?

Being typically a game for the hackers and baseliners of the game, how does clay affect doubles-wherein players committ to short points, looking to get in off first serve/return to put away a volley. And will we see different players prospering this season?

I guess it typically means that the real doubles teams, the ones that really rely on volleying, are at a bit of a disadvantage. The differences here are not as big as they are in singles, but I would say that this surface allows for non-doubles specialists to do well (e.g. Rochus / Malisse and Gasquet / Golovin last year), whereas they will have trouble performing well at Wimbledon. Don't expect good results from the Aussie players on clay.

Looking forward to what the results bring! Jim had an atrocious clay season last year-typical American

Re: Clay Season - Effects for Doubles?

but you can also say, double specialists such as the bryans also come to the semis, its not a clear disadvantage

The Bryans sit up so much and work from the back a great deal.

They are by no means typical volleying doubles players, I think. Of course you will always see top teams do well on all surfaces. I'd just say that the odds of a team consisting of singles players doing well are significantly higher at RG than at any other Grand Slam. The pair of Massu / Gonzalez could also do well.

Do you think they will play together? They haven't yet played this year together, and Massu hasn't played Doubles, full stop. He has played just one event the entire year (Aus Open, 2nd Rnd loss)

Considering Massu's injuries, it's not surprising they haven't played yet. I'd say RG is the perfect Slam for them to do well, after the Olympics

Re: Clay Season - Effects for Doubles?

IMO, hope it's someone different Bored of Bjorkman, Woodbridge, Paes, Mirnyi, Bhupathi etc With all due respect. Was awesome to see Malisse/Rochus do well.
