Re: Best winner after having saved match points.

Felix Mantilla has won matches twice after saving 9 match points.

The first time was against Berasategui at Hamburg in 1998.
He did in the semis of Palermo 2001 against Albert Portas.

Mantilla was also down 5 match points and the score was 7-5 5-1 against Ginepri and he won 12 games in a row.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: Best winner after having saved match points.

If I am playing and down a:

Set Point
Break Point
Match Point

I think to my self I need to win and I usually play a base-line ralley and wear the opponant down. Or play a good fore-hand.

I'm not afraid of anyone, but sometimes I'm afraid of myself.

Life it's a great game.
-Andre Agassi-

He was too good. I would suggest to his next opponent that he doesn't look to me for advice.

Re: Best winner after having saved match points.

Schuettler saved 10 mps in Kitzbhuel last year against Andreas Seppi and won the 2nd set 7-6 then the last one 6-0. The best bit was that Seppi beat him at the US Open after being down 2 sets to love.

You can also ask Guga, he'll tell you, after saving a match point in RG 2001 4th against Russell with a 26-shots rally! Imagine the pressure Down 2 sets to love, being #1 in the world, ultra favorite and defending champion! I'm pretty sure Gaudio felt a lot of pressure in last year's RG too! There were some long rallies out there on match points!

Re: Best winner after having saved match points.

In Australian Open 2002 3rd round, Ljubo leads 6-4 6-4 5-1 against Ferreira. Ljubo served and it was 40-15 (2 MPs).

Wayne Ferreira save these match points and he wins 4-6 4-6 7-6 6-3 7-5

I think that Ferreira could be considerer as one of bests.

Came back from 6-4 6-4 5-1 (40-15) to 6-4 6-4 6-7 3-6 5-7 is really WOW

P.S. That was the best chance for Ljubo to past 3rd round in GS

Whoa!!! There was also Myskina, in San Diego semis last year, who saved 10 match points against Zvonareva, being down 2-5 in the 3rd set and winning it in a tiebreak, 17-15!

Re: Best winner after having saved match points.

Mantilla saving 9 mps twice is something that is so underrated it's not funny.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Not as much as me.

That I will never forget and one week later he won his 3rd RG. What if one of those balls which almost touched the line had gone some centimeters out, everything would be different...

The ending was beautiful when he declared his love to the crowd by making a hearth on the clay and lying there! The hearth was ugly but the gesture simply beats anything I have seen on a tennis court before! What a nice player we are talking about here, a true hero with so much hearth! Someone you just love see on the court. We have talked much about the bad boys of tennis, throwing raquets, screaming and behaving bad. What we need more of are people like Guga, with that great smile on his face and the nice behaviour on the court he simply outshined the bad boys.

To me he was a greater tpersonality thatn even Agassi, even if I like Agassi too. If Guga would be american, there would be no limits for his popularity.

Prediction for the rest of the decade:
Federer winner: Usopen 05, 06, 07, 09 Aopen:06, 07, 10 Roland GArros:06, 08 Wimbledon:05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 (Roddick always runner up)
Safin winner: Aopen 08 Gasquet winner: USopen 08, Aopen 09, RG: 10
Nadal winner: RG 07 Monfils winner: USopen 10
Guga winner: RG 2010
Roddick and Hewitt together winner of: 3 sidney, 4 Adelaide, 3 washington, 3 san jose, 3 indianapolis, 2 houston, 2 memphis, 5 queens and one master series title (where Safin, Agassi, Federer and Nadal happens to all be injured).

Re: Best winner after having saved match points.

If Federer faces Guga in a RG final I will simply be on Guga's side. That is the least I can do to someone who in the first place made me interested in tennis.

Prediction for the rest of the decade:
Federer winner: Usopen 05, 06, 07, 09 Aopen:06, 07, 10 Roland GArros:06, 08 Wimbledon:05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 (Roddick always runner up)
Safin winner: Aopen 08 Gasquet winner: USopen 08, Aopen 09, RG: 10
Nadal winner: RG 07 Monfils winner: USopen 10
Guga winner: RG 2010
Roddick and Hewitt together winner of: 3 sidney, 4 Adelaide, 3 washington, 3 san jose, 3 indianapolis, 2 houston, 2 memphis, 5 queens and one master series title (where Safin, Agassi, Federer and Nadal happens to all be injured).

I would be with Guga all the way too! Even if Rogi is my 2nd favorite player, Guga is and will always be my #1!

Re: Best winner after having saved match points.

Andrey Chesnokov saved 9 match points in a crazy 5-setter in Davis Cup semifinal against Michael Stich in 1995 with the fifth set ending at 14-12. Andy was named a national hero after that match.
