Has anyone ever won 3 straight tmc titles?

Another record for federer to break?

Can't wait for Monte Carlo, this will be the beginning for the last test for Federer, how good is he on clay?

What a challenge this will be and how many interesting opponents he will have against him, the clay season will definetly be the highlight of the season!

Prediction for the rest of the decade:
Federer winner: Usopen 05, 06, 07, 09 Aopen:06, 07, 10 Roland GArros:06, 08 Wimbledon:05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 (Roddick always runner up)
Safin winner: Aopen 08 Gasquet winner: USopen 08, Aopen 09, RG: 10
Nadal winner: RG 07 Monfils winner: USopen 10
Guga winner: RG 2010
Roddick and Hewitt together winner of: 3 sidney, 4 Adelaide, 3 washington, 3 san jose, 3 indianapolis, 2 houston, 2 memphis, 5 queens and one master series title (where Safin, Agassi, Federer and Nadal happens to all be injured).

Pigs will fly if Federer somehow wins Monte Carlo - and that's if he's even playing it.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

I do not think that anyone has won three in a row, but I wonder if The Fed will even play Monte-Carlo. He hasn't the last two years. Also he would not be the favorite on that surface/conditions.

It would be an incredible challenge, I really, really want him to play in Monte Carlo.

Re: Has anyone ever won 3 straight tmc titles?

Why the skepticism about him at Monte Carlo, Sjengster? He's won a couple Hamburgs and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, so he's at least decent at clay, but I've never really seen him play much on the red dirt.

I am a fan of Federer, Gasquet, Baghdatis, the long-deceased Safin, Youzhny, Nalbandian, Rochus, Tsonga, the sadly-departed Santoro, and good, hearty, competitive tennis matches. The quality of my life does not rest solely on who wins these matches. In fact, I would even go as far as to say that I can live quite happily after a player I like chokes, mugs, bashes, or otherwise succumbs to a loss.

Re: Has anyone ever won 3 straight tmc titles?

I know that Roddick, Agassi (twice), Rios, Rafter, Sampras, Medvedev, Chang, Courier won back-to-back Masters Titles.

I remember an article that said that "Safin is looking to become the first player to win three consecutive ATP Masters Series titles" after having won in Madrid and Paris at the end of last year.

If this information is correct, then I think Federer could try becoming the first player now to accomplish that feat too when playing Monte Carlo.

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

He will be playing all three clay MS events. He already stated this before the match.

Re: Has anyone ever won 3 straight tmc titles?

Nobody has won 3 straight TMS events in a row since it's inception in 1990.

As for five straight tournies, I know McEnroe did it in 84 : Philly/Richmond/Madrid/Brussels/Dallas WCT/Forrest Hills/World Team Cup before losing in the finals at the French to Lendl. Lendl did it twice in 82 (at least once which was 6 in a row! but I think he actually did it twice). Pete did it in 94 when he won IW/Miami/Osaka/Tokyo Outdoor/Rome! before losing to Stich in World Team Cup and in the quarters of the French to Andre. Muster did it 95 when he won Estoril/Bacelona/Monte Carlo/Rome/The French/St. Poelten and then finally lost to Corretja in Gstaad.

Andre almost did it in '95 when he won Washington/Montreal/Cincy/New Haven and eventually lost in the final of the USO to Pete.

Re: Has anyone ever won 3 straight tmc titles?

Federer already has 6 Master Series. Agassi has 17 and Sampras has 11, so Federer may come close to this record as well.

Re: Has anyone ever won 3 straight tmc titles?

I'm a little surprised that he's playing Monte Carlo. I was assuming that he wouldn't since last year he didn't and had enough rest between the two AMS tournaments, now it's just so little time. But the period he had off-court before Indian Wells and Miami wasn't all that big, so who knows...

Federer has proved himself on clay. He has won Hamburg twice, reached the final of Rome and quarterfinals of Roland Garros. These are good numbers. Of course he's not the favorite there, but I think this is somehow a good point for him, because it takes some pressure off him.

If he really plays Monte Carlo, good luck then!

I don't know about reaching Agassi's record, let alone break it, but reaching Sampras' will be "easier", maybe within 2 or 3 years the most - if he stays injury-free and keep it up with his games and there's no surprise on the tour.

why not? Monte carlo has the conditions closest to RG and after skipping it for 2 years his results at the FO perhaps reflect that. Better to skip rome.
