Best matches of the 21st century (from 01/01/01 till now)

Federer-Sampras in Wimby 01 is very emblematic and fascinates me: the game, the breakthrough of Fed, the charisma of both giants, the ending winning streak of Pete... in the oldest trounament in the world... just beautiful

Agassi-Rafter SF Wimby 01: good suspense, opposition in styles, drama involved seeing Agassi losing ground in the 5th, artistic Rafter, great

Safin-Federer AO 05: drama, matchpoints for both, rare loss of Fed despite a great fightng spirit

Gaudio-Coria Final RG 04: out of this world, the brutal change in the scenario, great communication of Gaudio with the public, again match points for both... the level was not great, but tennis only can offer such mental battles...

What are yours ?

"I asked a bloke in the front row if he liked the serve-and-volley stuff," said Rafter. "He said he did but asked if he was going to get to see any rallies. 'Not today, mate,' I told him."

Spadea-Sanchez 2005 Auckland: That was a brilliant match

Gambill-Gaudio 2002 US Open; Beautiful tennis

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

i agree with a lot of the ones you've already said, esp safin/fed AO 2005 and rg final 2004.

i also liked safin/haas AO 2002, safin agassi AO 2004

rafter/ivanisevic wimby 2001

(also philippoussis/safin bercy final 2000 but that's too early, though i class that as being 21st century too!)

What was so special in this one, I didn't see it...

"I asked a bloke in the front row if he liked the serve-and-volley stuff," said Rafter. "He said he did but asked if he was going to get to see any rallies. 'Not today, mate,' I told him."

it was just a great match...quite dramatic...cos safin was fully down...haas had him on the ropes and then the rain came and saved marat...cos when they came back out, he played phenomenally.

rafter/ ivanisevic...the crowd was nuts!!! the match was amazing...never seen anything like it, especially for an English crowd. Match was played on a Monday, not a Sunday which was a 1st for Wimby. It was dubbed the "peoples' match" from what i remember. I thought it was a football match after awhile...wish i had it on tape.

'I'd like to be in his shoes for one day,' says Mats Wilander, 'to know what it feels like to play that way.'
on Roger Federer

Personally I think Labadze vs Roddick at the Oz Open 2005 was the most enjoyable match I've ever watched. It's the moment I realised its imperative for tennis that Labadze reaches the top 20, he will do so much for the games profile.
