Nadal: the true rival ?

If both Nadal and Federer reach the finals, that could be interesting: Nadal has won their first encounter and has not been yet "federerized" like Hewitt and Roddick.
Could he be the true rival of Fed in the coming years ?
-he's quite versatile, getting good results on hard courts
-his favourite surface is clay, which allows him to build confidence outside Fed's territory like in South America
-He's a fighter like Hewitt but attacks much more and has a lethal weapon in his forehand
-He's much steadier mentally than a Safin
-He likes big events' pressure and big crowds as we've seen in DC
-force or weakness? he can still develop areas in his game like his service
-He's highly motivated by Wimby, meaning he's ready to do whatever needs to be done to do well there

Overall we can hope a good H2H battle between the two, starting maybe by a final in Miami.
What do you think ?

"I asked a bloke in the front row if he liked the serve-and-volley stuff," said Rafter. "He said he did but asked if he was going to get to see any rallies. 'Not today, mate,' I told him."

Re: Nadal: the true rival ?

1-0 Nadal

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Yeah, too early to tell. But it will be very interesting to see how he plays against Fed, should both reach the finals.

possibly in the coming years...but Rafa's weakness is his fitness...as long as he can stay fit, who knows what can happen!

I agree with mdhubert's analysis. Nadal is certainly on his way up and he has great potential and he doesnot look like a classic claycourter to me. However, it is a different story to get to the top and to stay there. So, only time will tell...

Let pray for Fed and Rafa reach the final first, then we will have many things to discuss.
I will hire someone to kidnap Ferrer.

His weakness is also his serve. Rafa's big problem against Federer will be that Federer will be getting almost all the serves back and be in the point. If he is on (like usual) he dominates the play. This is what happens to Hewitt. Fed gets the ball back in play and then dominates. Rafa would have to hold serve many times when Federer is threatening at 30 or at deuce. Should be interesting if both get to the final.
