Attitude to media and sponsors? It's that a factor, too?

Maybe that's why Marat didn't win. Or because ATP always does strange things?

But congratulations to Moya!!

Okay I'm sorry, but Moya wasn't even the most deserving Spaniard (1-3 head to head this year, 2 of those losses coming in finals).

That said, it should have been Marat.

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Not to mention, Moya is the 3rd ranked European behind Safin and Ferrero..

Moya won four tournements: one is a super nine and final in Monaco. He jumped from the 35 place at the beginning of the year, to the fifth place at the end of the year.
Played several semifinals too..... he was very regular during the lyear. He beated several top five players: Hewitt, Safin, Fererro , Agassi etc.....
He made the biggest come back this year;

Listen - I think Moya had a great year. I think he might even have a better year next year.

But only one of his titles were big. Yes they are still titles. But IMO Marat and Ferrero both pass him. Ferrero if only because he beat him twice in finals, and once a semi final - two of those were big tournaments, and all of them different surfaces. He single handedly kept Moya's ranking below his... he made a slam final, etc etc.

But like I said... It should have been Marat, and if he was going to be snubbed it should have been for Ferrero.

Just my opinion. NOthing I say takes away from what Moya did this year, that is not my aim.

I'm merely confused.

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Moya Wins Inaugural ATP European Player of the Year Award
Moya won four ATP tournaments in 2002 and qualified for the year-end Tennis Masters Cup.

Monte Carlo, Monaco -- Spain's Carlos Moya has won the inaugural ATP European Player of The Year Award as voted by the European ATP tournament directors.

The Spaniard, who finished the year at No. 5 in the ATP Champions Race winning four events in 2002, will receive a Waterford Crystal engraved trophy at his first ATP event in Europe in 2003.

The ATP European Player of the Year Award is based on diverse criteria such as the final ATP Champions Race position of the player, attitude towards media and sponsors, cooperation and support of the European events.

emphasis mine -- but that's why Ferrero didn't win, me thinks. Remember his (justifiable) spat at Roma?

Plus, 3 of Moya's 4 titles came on the European circuit . . .

Hi all!

Just reading your views on Moya. I for one am very happy for Carlos. I think he deserves the award. He's worked so hard this year to come back and I was very happy that he made it to Shanghai and came out top of his group even though Juanqui beat him in the semis.

Hackie, your point re: titles on European soil/courts is an interesting one -- did they take that into consideration? If so, perhaps we should revisit this whole thing, out of curiosity!

I also think that despite only winning 1 tournament, Marat actually did well even though his temperament got the better of him quite often this year.

As for Juanqui, he's clearly the BEST Spaniard and he's improving by leaps and bounds although his results don't reflect this -- most would simply say but he got to the RG final but didn't win it!! He's getting there and I think he'll achieve his BIG goal next year [winning that GS or TMC].

One day my Rogi will win the award, I hope!

I don't think Marat cares one way or another, but I guess the recognition would not hurt. One's thing is for sure Marat is probably having the time of his life, he's on vacation and away from tennis for a whole month!!!

Congratulations Carlos!!!!
