Florian Mayer of Germany defeats Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3

In 2004, Fernando Gonzalez finished in Top 25, captured his fourth career ATP title in Vina del Mar (d. Kuerten) in February. Biggest moment of season came at Athens Olympics where he captured bronze medal in singles and gold medal in doubles (w/Massu).

Today, in Miami, he was facing Florian Mayer.

Up 5-2 in the first set, Gonzo's wild forehands were really hurting the German. Then, rain.

After the rain, the match changed.

Gonzo was trying to find his rythm, tried a few dropshots that didn't work and Mayer was playing really well, he held serve twice and broke Gonzo's serve. They were tied 5-5.

In the tiebreak, Gonzo couldn't believe Mayer was back and lost 4 consecutive points, they changed ends and it was 4-2. Florian won the tiebrak 7-3

In the second set, Fernando won 6-2. Mayer was not playing well again, and Gonzo's forehand was back.

But the German was probably saving his energy because he won the third and final set 6-3

Florian Mayer continues his good run in Miami. He eliminated two Germans in the maind draw: Lars Burgsmuller and Nicolas Kiefer, and now, Chilean Fernando Gonzalez.

In the next round his opponent will be American Taylor Dent.

Florian Mayer won ATP Newcomer of the Year.

He made one of the biggest jumps of any player in the Top 50, climbing over 200 ranking positions in his first full season of ATP play. He advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2004 in his third appearance at a Grand Slam.

Your not going to get any rhythm from Mayer, a really uncoventional style and technique give him all sorts of angles to play with. I like this guy, and lets not forget that he also beat Gonzalez last year.

Can't really say too much about this match. I don't know much about either player, but Taylor Dent shouldn't have many problems with this German dude. I'd be surprised if this lasts longer than two sets with the way Taylor has stepped it up in the past couple of games.

And he's no Jeff Morrison LOL, he won't tank games unless his *funky* injuries occur again. :\

Actually, Mayer is the right kind of player to ground Dent right now. He has the reach to get to Dent's serve, and the skills to trip up Dent with odd spins and force Taylor to play a game he doesn't want to.

I look forward to Dent v Mayer, two unorthodox styles and I think we'll see plenty of slice/net play from these two and not many long rallies. This was the kind of match that must have de la Pena tearing his hair out.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Yeah, but you know that Feña is unpredictable ... He should have won the match in straight sets

It seems the Newcomer of the year award has given Florian some newfound confidence! I hope he wins against Dent!
I saw him take a set off Andre at the US Open last year...before he had to retire from an injury.....he was so fun to watch! Ever since then I've been rooting for him....his results this year have not quite been up to expectations...Hopefully he'll turn that around now!

Florian will probably be top 20 at some point, but he's not going to win a slam or anything.

I like him, he's a cutie.
