The Spanish Armada

I was just looking through the rankings and I noticed that Spain has an astounding 17 players in the top 100. The only other country that comes close is Argentina with a mere 11.

6 Moya, Carlos
13 Robredo, Tommy
21 Lopez, Feliciano
31 Nadal, Rafael
44 Ferrer, David
45 Verdasco, Fernando
56 Costa, Albert
57 Martin, Alberto
62 Montanes, Albert
74 Ventura, Santiago
78 Calatrava, Alex
82 Garcia-Lopez, Guillermo
83 Almagro, Nicolas
85 Ferrero, Juan Carlos
88 Mantilla, Felix
94 Hernandez, Oscar
98 Sanchez, David

Granted, some of these top players will probably not get much higher than their current ranking (Moya, Robredo).

Some are journeyman who likely won't advance much further (Hernandez).

Some are veterans on the decline (Mantilla, Sanchez).

But the vast majority of these players are either veterans who will likely resurge (Ferrero), or young, talented players likely to peak much higher than they are now (Lopez, Nadal, Verdasco, Almagro).

I don't think I've seen a country with so much young talent in a long time (with the possible exception of France, which always has the talent but they never seem to produce). It's odd to think that 2000 was the first time that Spain won the Davis Cup... but it would seem that with a lineup like this, they're likely to win it many more times.

You're just noticing this now?

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

*smack*

I didn't notice the huge gap.

Mostly I just wanted to post about it.

Agree on most part of your post, but I don´t think López´s peak is much higher than his current ranking. In fact, imo he has already reached his peak

Re: The Spanish Armada

Also, maybe they're doing better in Davis Cup because they've finally started to emphasize the importance of playing on other sufaces? Ferrero and Moya both did pretty well on the grass in 2003, even in defeat. All the top-100 Spaniards are successul away from the clay, even to players like Feliciano, who claims that grass is his favorite surface.

Yum. I like Spain.
