Can anyone explain this pic?

http://alexusjones.com/Picture%20179.jpg

Obviously there's some sort of training for serving going on here (if you haven't heard of her, she's Alexus Jones, who everyone is calling the next tennis great and she's like 7 years old) but I can't tell what. What does having the legs crossed do? And the towel? Anyone? Just curious. Thanks.

The crossing of the legs is most likely used to help you use the upper-body as opposed to only the legs. This is a great method in improving the upper-body portion of the serve. It forces you to do more "up top."

The towel method is a way to help teach exactly how you must hit the ball for it to go in the service box. If you think about physics, you would have to be about 6'11" to be able to hit down on the ball and it not go into the net. You need to hit on the bottom half of the ball, and snap your wrist for your racquet to kinda catipult it so it goes over the net, but in the square. Of course this varies a bit per serve. The towel method includes bending down on the towel on your knee and then trying to hit a serve in the service box. It forces to one hit the ball properly.

I hope this made sense. As for Alexus, I've seen her play live, she's amazing.

Re: Can anyone explain this pic?

sorry, i hope this isn't rude to inteject here and ask how alexus plays. but really, how does she? and how good/often/what age group does she play?

she might be the next best thing for america for a while which is kinda crazy.

Maybe Roger can win Roland Garros.......

When I saw her play, it was at an exhibition juniors match in Florida, and that was in July of 04. You can read all about her at http://alexusjones.com , but I can tell you from watching her live I was pretty shocked at the amount of power she has for her age. She definitely looks like a 7-year-old Serena Williams. Not that it's shocking, seeing as how she's worked with Richard Williams, Rick Macci among others.

The age group thing I'm not sure on. I don't think she regularly competes in the juniors, but if she did I'm sure she wouldn't be competing in the 7-year-old group.

Re: Can anyone explain this pic?

The hype surrounding this girl bothers me a lot Nobody that young should be under that much pressure. At least I never heard of Sharapova until she was about 11 or 12. (and that was too much, imo). If I'm not mistaken, this girl already has sponsers being lined up

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

If I'm not mistaken, the thread was posted to question her practice technique. Perhaps you dont' care about those sort of things, but some of us do (not that my last comment had anything to do with that, but whatever)

The hype is hilariously funny, but I guess it's stuff like this that makes the world go 'round.

Why don't they give her a Wild Card into the next Masters Series, she's obviously ready. Like Donald Young is.

Re: Can anyone explain this pic?

I would love to see her play live, good luck to her. I thought the towel might be something to do with bouncing it! but Pailii's theory really makes sense

has anyone ever heard of exploitation? interesting picture and theory but that's bullshit . . . leave her alone and IF her parents don't get that then shame on them. Kids should be kids!!

Re: Can anyone explain this pic?

Heh. Talk about a thread that has gone off topic.

If we're looking at the amount of training she's going through, it's no more than the current pros went through. The only difference is this girl's "training life" has been made a public affair through a documentary that started filming some time last year.

I remember training hours upon hours per day with several coaches each and every day since the age of five up until a year ago when I decided to focus on school more. I think so long as SHE is enjoying it and isn't being forced into doing this, then the result will be all right. Otherwise, if she's being forced to become this future champion that she doesn't wish to be, I'd classify it as being extremely cruel on her parents' part.

To my knowledge, this topic wasn't started to discuss HER, but rather the techniques being used in the serving picture, which have been cleared up.
